This year, our SAE Formula team's objective is to improve our ranking in the upcoming racing competition. The event is scheduled from June 19 to June 22, 2019, in Lincoln, Nebraska, where we will compete against 79 other schools. Our team is working on designing two racing cars for this season: a traditional car with an engine and an innovative electric car that does not require an engine. Currently, our focus is on collecting ideas and designing the vehicles, with the building phase planned for the next semester. The SAE Formula project is divided into two main teams: the Design Team and the Finance Team.

The Design Team is responsible for designing and constructing the formula cars, while the Finance Team's role is to secure sponsorships and funding to cover the costs associated with the design and construction. As part of the Finance Team, our specific responsibility is to raise the necessary funds—$2000 per student, aiming to reach a total target of approximately $150,000—to support the design team's work. The financial aspect involves outreach to potential sponsors and managing fundraising efforts to ensure the project is adequately funded.

The SAE Formula Student competition, also known as FSAE, is a prestigious engineering contest that originated in 1980 at the University of Texas and has since grown into a global event featuring participation from universities worldwide. The competition challenges students to design, build, and race small-scale formula-style vehicles, emphasizing not only speed but also innovation in design, safety, fuel efficiency, and overall engineering competence. For students, the competition offers an invaluable experiential learning platform, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering problems, foster teamwork, and develop skills such as project management, problem-solving, and communication.

During this season, our university's team is divided into several sub-teams, each focusing on specific aspects of the vehicle such as aerodynamics, chassis, controls, electrical systems, drive train, and suspension. Members from both the design and finance teams are integrated into these sub-teams to ensure cohesive collaboration, streamline communication, and facilitate resource sharing. This structural division enhances project management and promotes a holistic approach to the vehicle development process, from initial design to prototype testing.

The financial sub-team plays a crucial role in securing the resources necessary to support all technical activities. After selecting the sub-teams with guidance from faculty advisors, we focused on engaging potential sponsors to fund our project. With assistance from team leaders like Dr. Prince and financial managers such as Udall and Timothy, our team developed sponsorship packages categorized into Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers, each offering specific benefits to our sponsors. These packages serve as a structured approach to attract diverse companies and organizations willing to support student engineering initiatives.

Our team reached out to various potential sponsors, notably SHP Performance, Al-Wasm Company, and Kuwait National Insurance Company. SHP Performance, located in Kuwait City, specializes in engine tuning, rebuilding, and fabrication, and expressed strong interest in supporting student projects, ultimately pledging $1100 per team member. Al-Wasm Company, based in Al-Wafrah City, contributed a total of $2000, motivated by their interest in fostering local student talent. Kuwait National Insurance Company sponsored the team with $1600. These contributions exemplify the importance of building relationships with industry partners and demonstrate the community's support for student engineering endeavors.

Through this fundraising process, our finance team gained practical insights into effective communication, sponsorship solicitation, and group collaboration. These experiences not only contribute to the successful funding of our current project but also equip us with skills relevant to future professional environments. Furthermore, working as a team fostered a sense of responsibility, accountability, and collective achievement, which are essential qualities for engineers and project managers.

In conclusion, the SAE Formula project provides an excellent platform for students to develop technical skills and soft skills that are essential in the engineering profession. Our team’s efforts to design innovative vehicles, secure funding, and collaborate across disciplines underscore the multifaceted nature of engineering projects. By participating in FSAE, students prepare themselves for future careers by learning invaluable lessons in teamwork, communication, and project management, all while contributing to the advancement of automotive engineering and sustainable transportation technologies.
