After Reading Chapter 2 And Reviewing The Lecture Power Point Located
After reading Chapter 2 and reviewing the lecture PowerPoint (located in the lectures tab), please answer the following questions. Each question must have at least 3 paragraphs and you must include at least 3 references in your post. Additionally, you are expected to reply to two other students and include a reference that justifies your post. Your reply must be at least 3 paragraphs. 1. There is a wide variety of perspectives and frameworks from which to practice nursing. After reading the various frameworks and theories presented, which most closely matches your beliefs? Please explain why. 2. After reading the Nurse of the future: Nursing core competencies on page 84, please describe how you plan to apply these 10 core competencies into your daily nursing practice. Please be sure to address all 10 competencies and give specific examples.
After reading Chapter 2 and reviewing the lecture PowerPoint, I have gained a deeper understanding of the various frameworks and theories that guide nursing practice. Among these, the most closely aligned with my beliefs is the holistic care framework. This approach emphasizes treating the patient as a whole—considering physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects. I believe that effective nursing extends beyond managing symptoms or disease; it involves understanding a patient's overall well-being, fostering connections, and promoting optimal health outcomes. The holistic framework resonates with my personal values of empathy, compassion, and respect for patient autonomy, which are essential qualities in nurse-patient interactions (Watson, 2019). This approach encourages nurses to consider not only the clinical aspects but also the patient's environment, cultural background, and mental health, which I believe are vital for comprehensive care.
Furthermore, the holistic perspective aligns well with the importance of patient-centered care, which emphasizes individualized treatment plans that respect patient preferences and values. Evidence suggests that holistic nursing improves patient satisfaction, reduces anxiety, and enhances recovery by addressing emotional and psychosocial needs (Kozlowski & Merton, 2020). As a future nurse, I aim to incorporate holistic principles into my daily practice by actively listening to patients, supporting their emotional needs, and fostering a trusting relationship. For instance, when caring for a patient with chronic illness, I would collaborate with them to develop a care plan that reflects their lifestyle, cultural practices, and personal goals, thus ensuring more meaningful and effective care.
In addition to aligning with my personal beliefs, the holistic model offers a comprehensive approach that is supported by current research emphasizing the importance of integrating physical, emotional, and spiritual health in nursing practice (Davis, 2021). This versatility makes it adaptable across various settings—from acute hospitals to community health—giving nurses the flexibility to provide care that truly meets each individual’s unique needs. Therefore, I am committed to adopting this framework as I develop my professional practice, continually striving to treat patients as complete beings rather than just biological systems.
Applying the Nurse of the Future Core Competencies
The Nurse of the Future: Nursing Core Competencies outlined on page 84 offers a comprehensive guide to preparing nurses for evolving healthcare needs. I plan to incorporate these ten competencies into my daily practice systematically. First, patient-centered care involves actively engaging patients in their care decisions, respecting their preferences, and fostering a collaborative environment, such as involving family members in discharge planning. Second, professionalism includes adhering to ethical standards and maintaining accountability, which I will uphold by consistently documenting care accurately and advocating for patient rights.
Third, leadership and professionalism complement each other; I intend to seek mentorship opportunities and take initiative in quality improvement projects within my team, demonstrating initiative and accountability. Fourth, safety is a priority, and I will apply evidence-based infection control measures and regularly assess for fall risks to promote a safe environment. Fifth, informatics and technology will be integral, as I plan to utilize electronic health records efficiently to ensure accurate documentation and facilitate communication among team members. Incorporating new health technologies, such as patient monitoring devices, will enhance care delivery.
Sixth, teamwork and collaboration are essential, and I will foster interprofessional relationships to coordinate comprehensive care. Seventh, communication skills are crucial; I will practice active listening and clear, concise information sharing to ensure mutual understanding with patients and colleagues. Eighth, quality improvement involves evaluating care outcomes and implementing strategies to enhance patient safety and satisfaction, which I plan to pursue through continuous education and feedback. Ninth, health promotion and disease prevention will guide my health education efforts, emphasizing lifestyle modifications and vaccination counseling. Lastly, the integration of evidence-based practice will be part of my routine, ensuring that my clinical decisions are grounded in current research, thus improving patient outcomes and professional credibility (American Nurses Association, 2019).
