Amy and others project that Amazon’s logistical operations are aimed at a broader goal of achieving nationwide same-day delivery; however, there are significant logistical challenges associated with this ambition. Delivering within such a tight timeframe requires an extensive, dense network of hubs, advanced routing algorithms, and substantial inventory management, especially in rural and less populated areas.
Conversely, Walmart is expanding its e-commerce footprint by leveraging its extensive physical stores as fulfillment centers and adopting a hybrid model that combines online ordering with in-store pickup and local delivery. Its supply chain superiority is rooted in a massive, integrated logistics system that utilizes both direct store deliveries and centralized distribution centers. This dual strategy enables Walmart to offer same-day or next-day pick-up and delivery services, which are especially appealing to consumers seeking convenience and immediacy.
In evaluating which approach is more likely to succeed, one must consider several factors, including logistical scalability, customer preferences, technological investments, and geographic reach. Amazon’s aggressive expansion into same-day delivery nationwide faces hurdles such as distribution density, traffic constraints, and urban infrastructure limitations. Nonetheless, its investments in automation, drone technology, and data analytics could potentially surmount these challenges over time (Kumar et al., 2020).
Walmart’s approach, leveraging its vast retail footprint, offers an advantage in terms of immediate accessibility and lower delivery costs for local orders. Its “store-as-fulfillment-center” model has demonstrated considerable success in urban and suburban markets. However, scaling this model countrywide while maintaining cost efficiency remains complex.
With respect to their future growth trajectories, Amazon has a significant opportunity to overtake Walmart as the world’s largest retailer, especially as online shopping continues to grow and consumers demand faster delivery options. Nevertheless, Walmart’s entrenched retail presence, brand loyalty, and localized logistics network provide a robust foundation that sustains its position as a retail powerhouse.
