An effective mentorship programs As a young person, finding the right individual to serve as a mentor is very important in defining the direction one develops as mentors assist in guiding and advising on crucial life-defining matters. My mentor’s name is Abdullah AL Qassim, a professional in the marketing discipline, who is a director at the WAYS Company. He is the founder of the organization, whereby he uses his creativity to revolutionize and influence the marketing department of the company. I found it necessary to get mentorship from Abdullah because of his vast experience in the field of marketing. I believe Abdullah is best placed to help me develop in International business; Abdullah has gone through it all to make the WAYS Company a successful start-up.
Over my interactions with Abdullah, I have found him to be very passionate and creative in all his undertakings. His passion coupled with his creativity makes him an intelligent individual that anyone in their right mind would love to work with and interact with. One of the main reasons as to why I chose him to be my mentor lies in his visionary abilities. Abdullah saw a future in the marketing field and pushed through to start up a successful start-up. I endeavor to be like him; to have a visionary trait that will enable me to succeed in the future just like Abdullah if not more than him.
I envision myself being able to read trends in the market in order to come up with brilliant and creative ideas and products. Since success is a future goal of mine and Abdullah is a representation of success, I see and believe that Abdullah is my key to success; through his mentorship. The dedication that I have seen in Abdullah inspires me to pursue the discipline I am passionate about just as he is about marketing. And I interviewed Abdullah through a Skype. I asked him a couple of questions about his journey as an international student.
Abdullah’s journey has not been easy but what has remained constant despite the challenges is his passion for marketing. Abdullah went to Boston College to further his education and as much as he was not sure he wanted to really do at first, he managed to identify his skills and the things he was passionate about before he was done with college. The realization of his passions and desires made him excel in school and score highly. After school, he started out as a stand-up comedian which is not an easy thing. He used the stand-up comedian platform to push himself to greater heights; starting up his own company.
By simply looking at his educational life and his immediate life after college, it is clear that Abdullah is hardworking and passionate, and I believe such traits are the best to have in a mentor. A look at the WAYS Company reveals that the company was founded by Abdullah and other ambitious Saudi youth who were keen on excelling in life. The company was started in 2016 and has managed to employ close to fifty people and as if hiring close to fifty people is not enough, the company managed to grow its roots in the Saudi Kingdom to the extent that it has good relationships with major companies in the kingdom. The success of Abdullah’s startup can be attributed to the company’s diversification as a marketing company as it deals with digital marketing, public relations, visual production, graphic design, and social media marketing.
The WAYS Company indirectly reveals the traits and attributes that Abdullah has as a mentor. As of the moment, my interaction with Abdullah has yielded good results. I have been able to learn about the skills, the knowledge, and the experiences that employers in International business need for them to make a hire. Fortunately, through Abdullah’s mentorship, I have been able to realize that I do not possess all the personal qualities I need to succeed in International business. I have learned that my interpersonal skills are wanting and as a result, I am working hard to improve them.
Other than learning about what employees look for when hiring and learning about the skills that I lack to make myself a good employee, I got to get more knowledge of careers in general. One particular thing that I learned about careers and professionalism is that commitment and passion are needed for success; one must be committed in their career if they want to succeed. Through further mentoring by Abdullah, I hope to gain self-discipline which will help me in growing in the right manner. Just to show how committed I am to the mentorship program, I have a progress chart to monitor my progress as I take up mentorship from Abdullah. Progress is significant to me and it is for that reason that I am in constant contact with my mentor.
I am very interested in knowing whether I am making any development or not. We are in constant communication with each other through Skype as we are in different geographical regions. I hope our communication model will change once I get back from abroad since we shall be in the same geographical location. I hope and aspire to have one-on-one face-to-face interaction with him as I am sure he has more to offer, more advice, and more counseling in face-to-face interactions than in telecommunication.
