Analyzing a Music Video

Each week, you will be asked to respond to the prompt or prompts in the discussion forum. Your initial post should be 75-150 words in length, and is due on Sunday. By Tuesday, you should respond to two additional posts from your peers.

Assignemnt Instructions:

Select a music video from YouTube, preferably a song, artist, or genre that is mostly new to you. Avoid content that is inappropriate or explicit. First, listen to the song silently with your eyes closed or turned away, and take notes on how the auditory stimuli affect you physically and emotionally. Next, watch the video without sound, observing the visual effects and noting any sensations or reactions. Finally, watch the video with both audio and visuals, and compare how your perceptions and emotional responses change across the three modalities: auditory, visual, and multimodal. Include a link or embed the video in your initial post, and discuss your observations and any differences you noticed.

In analyzing a music video through the lens of sensory perception, it becomes evident how auditory and visual stimuli influence emotional and physiological responses. I selected the song “Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee, a genre I do not frequently explore. Initially, listening silently, I felt a calming yet energizing sensation, a gentle uplift in my mood, accompanied by a slight twitch in my left leg—a bodily response to the upbeat tempo. The auditory modality evoked feelings of nostalgia and lightheartedness, aligning with the song’s mellow vibe. When I turned off the sound and watched the video, I was struck by the vibrant color palette and dynamic camera movements. The animated, playful visuals elicited a sense of whimsy and curiosity, triggering a tingling sensation in my fingertips, perhaps due to the visual stimulation’s engagement with my sensory processing. Watching the video with both sound and visuals heightened my emotional response; I felt the joy and vibrancy more intensely, with simultaneous physical sensations of warmth and excitement spreading across my chest and limbs.

The differences across modalities highlight how sound primarily influences emotional states and bodily sensations through auditory channels, while visuals impact perceptions through sensory engagement and coherence with the music. The multimodal experience intensified my overall emotional response, aligning with theories that multisensory integration enhances engagement and emotional impact (Calvert, Spence, & Stein, 2004). This exercise underscores the importance of sensory modalities in shaping our emotional landscape and suggests applications in multimedia entertainment and therapy. My reactions mirrored many of my classmates’ experiences, though some reported more subdued responses to the visuals, perhaps due to personal preferences or prior familiarity with the content. These varying reactions emphasize individual differences in sensory processing and emotional response, illustrating the complex interplay between auditory and visual stimuli in shaping our experiences.
