This chapter distinguished charismatic leadership from transformational leadership. Yet charisma is identified by most employees and managers as a characteristic of effective leaders. Why is charisma commonly related to leadership?

In the opinion of many scholars, charisma is often associated with leadership because it embodies qualities that inspire and motivate followers, such as confidence, vision, and persuasiveness (Bass & Steidlmeier, 1999). Charismatic leaders possess an innate ability to influence others through their personal charm and compelling communication, which fosters trust and loyalty within a team or organization (Conger & Kanungo, 1988). This influence often translates into heightened motivation and commitment, making charisma a desirable trait in leaders. Moreover, in complex or uncertain environments, charismatic leaders can provide a sense of stability and purpose, which is highly valued (Hogan et al., 1994).

In the author's view, the best leaders are not necessarily charismatic; instead, effective leadership depends on a combination of traits, including emotional intelligence, integrity, and strategic thinking (Goleman, 1990). While charisma can enhance influence, it does not guarantee ethical or effective leadership. Many effective leaders are pragmatic and rely on competence, consistency, and vision rather than charisma alone (Yukl, 2013). Therefore, although charisma is a powerful leadership trait, it is not the sole indicator of good leadership. Ultimately, a balanced combination of personal qualities and skills determines a leader’s effectiveness.
