Creating online quizzes has become increasingly vital due to the surge in online education. This process involves designing effective questions, selecting a suitable technological platform, and considering whether such tools will be used in future instructional practices. In this discussion, I detail how I developed quiz questions, utilized the SurveyMonkey platform to disseminate the quiz, and evaluate the potential for continued use of this technology.
My experience with creating quiz questions stems from my background instructing and performing the Rapid Strep Test, a procedure with a well-defined process established by the manufacturer. Since the test hinges on memory, manual dexterity, and specific procedural steps rather than theoretical comprehension, I tailored my questions to focus primarily on the "how-to" aspects of the test. I deliberately avoided negative or trick questions, as these require reverse thinking, which could confound learners unfamiliar with the process (DiSantis, Ayoob, & Williams, 2015). Ensuring clarity was paramount; I designed each question to have a single, unambiguous correct answer to minimize confusion (Focuszone Media, Inc, 2019). Additionally, I maintained similar lengths across all answer choices to prevent learners from dismissing options based on length differences, which can inadvertently influence their choices (Focuszone Media, Inc, 2019).
For the technological aspect, I selected SurveyMonkey as my platform for creating and distributing the online quiz. SurveyMonkey is a widely used tool that enables educators and organizations to collect feedback, surveys, and assessments efficiently (SurveyMonkey, 2015). Given that I had no prior experience with online quiz platforms, the process was initially daunting. Nevertheless, SurveyMonkey's streamlined interface and user-friendly features facilitated a smooth creation process. I appreciated how intuitive the platform was, allowing me to focus on question quality rather than technical challenges. Based on this positive experience, I plan to continue utilizing SurveyMonkey or similar online tools for future assessments, appreciating their convenience and efficiency in managing online evaluations.
The shift from paper-based testing to digital quizzing aligns well with the current digital transformation in education. Online platforms like SurveyMonkey have simplified the logistics of distributing, collecting, and analyzing quiz data, saving significant time and resources (Johnson & Kaye, 2020). The ability to instantly compile results and generate reports also enhances feedback delivery, which is critical for formative assessment and student learning improvement (Cheng & Wang, 2018). Furthermore, online quizzes can be easily adapted for remote or hybrid learning environments, providing flexibility that traditional paper tests cannot match (Mishra & Sukumar, 2021).
However, certain challenges persist, such as ensuring academic integrity and preventing cheating in online assessments (Cizek, 2018). Additionally, technological issues like connectivity problems can hinder the seamless administration of online quizzes. Despite these concerns, the compatibility of online tools with diverse learning environments underscores their strategic importance in modern education (Li & Lee, 2022). Future incorporation of online quizzing will likely involve not only platforms like SurveyMonkey but also integrated Learning Management Systems (LMS) that offer comprehensive assessment solutions (Davis et al., 2019).
In conclusion, designing effective quiz questions tailored to the assessment’s purpose and leveraging user-friendly technology platforms like SurveyMonkey have enhanced my ability to conduct assessments efficiently. The potential for ongoing use of such digital tools is promising, given their capacity to adapt to various learning contexts, facilitate immediate feedback, and streamline evaluation processes. As online education continues to evolve, developing competency in creating and implementing digital assessments will be vital for educators aimed at improving student engagement and learning outcomes.
