Describe a few minutes of your day in thorough detail. Choose a mundane regular day-to-day topic such as some part of your morning routine (waking up and getting out of bed or brushing your teeth or choosing your clothes), sitting on the couch watching TV and getting up to get a snack, preparing to cooking a meal or make a sandwich. Include everything you did, thought, sensed (saw, heard, tasted, smelled, felt), experienced during this time. Leave nothing out.

I think this is the worst assignment of the semester. You will be graded on the effort you make rather than the quality of the writing. In other words, if you really make an effort to do a careful, thorough job, you will do fine. Submit via the class server.

I stretch my arms and yawn, feeling the coolness of the sheets against my skin as I move to sit up. As I swing my legs over the side of the bed, I notice the soft, slightly rough texture of the carpet beneath my bare feet and the faint creak of the bed springs.

My senses become more alert as I cross the room, the faint aroma of my favorite coffee beans wafting from the kitchen, mingling with the subtle scent of clean laundry from the clothes I left on a chair overnight. I open the cabinet and retrieve my toothbrush, feeling the smooth, cool plastic in my hand. I turn on the tap, hearing the steady flow of water, and splash some cold water on my face. The sensation refreshes me, heightening my awareness of the moment.

Next, I dispense a pea-sized amount of peppermint-flavored toothpaste onto the brush, feeling its soft bristles as I begin to scrub gently. I notice the slight metallic taste of the toothpaste and the tingling sensation in my gums with each stroke. My mind drifts briefly to thoughts of the day’s tasks—meetings, deadlines, and personal plans—yet I remain present in the act of cleaning my teeth, focusing on the taste, the sound of the bristles against my teeth, and the clean, minty scent that fills my nose.

After rinsing my mouth and toothbrush, I step into the closet to choose my outfit. I feel the textures of different fabrics—cotton, wool, synthetic blends—as I survey my options. I select a comfortable shirt and jeans, feeling their weight and soft feel against my skin as I put them on. While dressing, I notice the ambient light in the room intensify as the sun rises, casting warm hues across the walls. I reflect briefly on my thoughts—anticipation for the day, worries about upcoming tasks—but remain grounded in the tactile sensations and sights around me.

Finally, I proceed to the kitchen, where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee greets me. I pour a cup, relishing the smooth, hot liquid as it warms my hands. I take a sip, feeling the warmth flood my mouth, followed by the rich, bitter taste that awakens my senses. As I decide whether to have breakfast, I listen to the distant sounds of the morning—birds chirping outside, the hum of appliances, and the muffled sounds from the street below. This brief, seemingly mundane set of minutes is rich with sensory experiences and thoughts, all contributing to the beginning of my day.
