Assignment 2: Analyzing World Cultures Media play a very large role in

Choose a world culture you are not familiar with. Identify two–three online videos or movies representative of this culture. These could be examples of cultural expressions such as a Bollywood movie from India or Anime videos from Japan. Evaluate two hours of such a video. Using the readings for this module, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research articles about your selected culture. Select a scholarly article that analyzes the same culture presented in the videos you have observed. Write a paper describing the cultural differences you have observed in the video. How are these observations supported by the research article? Be sure to include the following: Describe the videos you have watched. Explain the main points of the videos. Examine what stood out about the culture. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences of this culture with your own. Examine the ways of this culture. Is it one you would want to visit or live in? Would you experience culture shock if you immersed yourself in this culture? Why or why not? Support your statements with examples and scholarly references. Write a 2–3-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Paper For Above instruction

In this paper, I explore the cultural elements of Japanese anime, which I selected as a cultural artifact distinct from my own Western background. I analyzed three popular anime videos—each representing various facets of Japanese culture—including “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Spirited Away,” and “Naruto.” These videos exemplify traditional and modern Japanese cultural elements, societal values, and storytelling techniques, providing insight into the cultural fabric of Japan. Through this analysis, I compare these observations with scholarly research, particularly an article by Smith (2020), which evaluates the cultural themes of Japan and their portrayal in media.

The videos I watched offer a vivid depiction of Japanese society, emphasizing values such as respect for nature, hierarchy, collectivism, and the importance of community. “My Neighbor Totoro” highlights a reverence for nature and childhood innocence, portrayimg rural life and familial bonds. “Spirited Away” explores themes of identity, respect, and purification, often reflecting Japan's spiritual traditions intertwined with modernity. “Naruto,” as an anime series, delves into themes of perseverance, loyalty, and self-discovery within a hierarchical society, highlighting the significance of tradition and social bonds.

What stood out about Japanese culture through these videos was the emphasis on harmony, social order, and respect for tradition. The depiction of nature and spirituality in “Spirited Away” aligns with traditional beliefs rooted in Shintoism, emphasizing purity and reverence for natural elements. Hierarchical relationships depicted in “Naruto” mirror societal structures present in Japan, where respect for elders and authority figures plays a central role.

Comparing Japanese culture with my own Western background reveals both similarities and differences. While both cultures value family and social bonds, Japanese culture exhibits a stronger emphasis on social harmony and obedience, whereas Western culture tends to prioritize individualism and personal freedom. For instance, the collective approach seen in Japanese society contrasts with individualistic pursuits prevalent in Western countries. Additionally, Japanese cultural expressions like anime and traditional festivals showcase a communal identity that differs from the more individual-centered Western entertainment and cultural practices.

Given the understanding gained from these videos and research, I find Japanese culture both intriguing and complex. The rich cultural traditions, respect for nature, and societal harmony make Japan appealing to visit. However, I believe immersing myself fully might lead to culture shock due to differences in social behaviors, communication styles, and social hierarchy. For example, the Japanese approach to politeness, indirect communication, and reverence for tradition differ substantially from Western norms. Nevertheless, experiencing this culture firsthand could foster greater appreciation and understanding of its values and practices.

In conclusion, through analyzing Japanese anime as a cultural medium, I gained insights into the core values and societal structures that shape Japanese life. The portrayal of nature, spirituality, hierarchy, and community in the videos aligns with scholarly perspectives, reinforcing the significance of cultural context in media representations. Engaging with this culture has broadened my perspective, highlighting the importance of cultural sensitivity and open-mindedness in global interactions. Overall, while the prospect of cultural immersion presents challenges, it promises enriching experiences and a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity.
