In this assignment, you will develop an understanding of the importance of these elements in the success/failure of an enterprise. This assignment is the first of the two LASA assignments you will complete in this course. Using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet, research methods of conducting internal and external environment analyses. Select at least three (3) scholarly sources to support the information in your report.
Description of LASA: In this assignment, you will assess an organization’s current position in the internal and external environment. Scenario: You have been hired as a consultant to evaluate the performance of a manufacturing or service organization. As part of your function, you need to assess the organization’s current position with regard to their business operations, strategy, and organizational structure, as well as identify potential ethical issues management may face. The executive management team has asked you to submit a report of your findings.
Instructions: Choose a publicly traded manufacturing or service organization to be the subject of your work for LASA 1 and LASA 2. (You should choose a different organization than you have used for previous assignments.) Select an organization about which there is an abundance of information made readily available to the public (via the corporate website, industry publications, business journals, etc.).
In preparation for your report, conduct your review of the organization using the following approach: Evaluate the company’s business strategy and global competitiveness plan. Conduct an internal assessment using SWOT analysis. Assess the external environment via an external scenario evaluation. Sketch the company’s organizational structure. Using the tools of business process design, define the organization’s business process. Identify any potential ethical issues that may impact the traditional management functions of the company and recommend preventative measures. Utilize at least three sources in your research. Your document should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Write an 8–10-page report in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

The evaluation and assessment of an organization’s internal and external environments are vital for understanding its current position and long-term sustainability. The process of conducting such an assessment involves analyzing internal strengths and weaknesses using SWOT analysis, and external opportunities and threats through external scenario evaluation. In this paper, I examine Amazon.com, a globally recognized e-commerce leader, to illustrate these analytical processes, alongside an exploration of the company's organizational structure, business processes, and potential ethical concerns.
Internal Environment Assessment
The internal environment of Amazon can be comprehensively analyzed through SWOT analysis, which highlights the organization's key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Amazon’s core strengths include a vast global supply chain, advanced technology infrastructure, and a diversified product and service portfolio that extends beyond traditional retail to cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence. Its customer-centric culture and innovative approach have propelled its competitiveness in the digital marketplace (Stone, 2013).
However, Amazon faces internal weaknesses such as thin profit margins, especially in the retail segment, and criticisms regarding labor practices and working conditions in its warehouses. Additionally, dependence on third-party sellers presents challenges related to quality control and brand reputation (Hastings & Meyer, 2019).
External Environment Analysis
Assessing Amazon’s external environment involves evaluating macroeconomic, technological, competitive, and regulatory factors. The external scenario analysis reveals opportunities such as expanding into emerging markets, continuous innovation in logistics and delivery systems, and leveraging data analytics for personalized marketing. Conversely, threats include intensifying competition from retailers like Walmart and Alibaba, regulatory pressures concerning antitrust issues, and geopolitical risks affecting international operations (Brynjolfsson et al., 2016).
Organizational Structure and Business Processes
Amazon’s organizational structure is characterized by a functional hierarchy complemented by a decentralized leadership approach, enabling agility and rapid decision-making. Its organizational design emphasizes innovation hubs, regional warehouses, and autonomous teams focused on specific business units (Hubbard, 2020).
Business Process Design
The core business processes involve procurement, order fulfillment, logistics management, customer service, and data analytics. Amazon employs sophisticated technology systems such as warehouse robotics, AI-driven logistics optimization, and cloud computing platforms to streamline operations and enhance customer experience (Chui et al., 2016).
Ethical Considerations and Preventative Measures
Ethical challenges faced by Amazon include labor practices, data privacy concerns, and supplier conduct. To address labor issues, implementing transparent labor audits and ensuring fair wages and working conditions is essential. Regarding data privacy, adherence to GDPR and other privacy regulations, along with transparent data management policies, is crucial. Ethical supply chain management involves auditing suppliers and enforcing ethical standards to prevent exploitation and environmental harm (Liu & McConnell, 2020).
Conclusion
Organizational assessment through internal and external analysis provides strategic insights necessary for sustained success. Amazon exemplifies a company with robust strengths and innovative strategies but faces challenges in ethical practices and competitive pressures. Proactive management of these issues is vital for maintaining its market leadership and ethical integrity.
