In this reflective analysis, I will evaluate the progress I made toward my personal, academic, and professional goals, focusing on the actions I implemented and their outcomes. My original goals centered on improving my interpersonal communication skills, particularly in professional settings. Throughout the process, I encountered both successes and challenges, which prompted me to adapt my action plan to better suit my circumstances and to ensure continuous progress.
Initially, my professional goal was to enhance my nonverbal communication to ensure my words align with my facial expressions and body language. My first intermediate goal was to take a course on interpersonal effectiveness. I planned to review the course catalog, consult my academic advisor, and enroll in a suitable course. However, I discovered that the course I identified would not be available until the following January, which was too distant for immediate benefit. To adapt, I searched for alternative learning opportunities and found an interpersonal effectiveness seminar scheduled in my town that would occur the following weekend. I registered for this seminar, which turned out to be highly insightful. Attending this seminar provided immediate practical strategies I could apply, and I felt more optimistic about my progress toward my goal.
My second intermediate goal involved practicing conversations with myself through mirror exercises or video recordings to observe and modify my facial expressions and vocal tone. Once I learned how to record myself using my phone (with help from a tech-savvy friend), I began to notice my natural tendencies—such as a habitual scowl and arm-crossing behavior during conversations. Recognizing these tendencies was initially uncomfortable, but through sustained awareness, I was able to consciously modify my facial expressions and body language. I started making intentional efforts to maintain a more open posture and positive facial cues. I found that paying attention to my nonverbal cues increased my confidence and made me appear more approachable. As a result, I observed that colleagues started initiating more interactions with me, which was a positive indicator of my progress.
The third intermediate goal was to improve my participation in team meetings by offering positive feedback and engaging more actively. I planned to draw a smiley face as a reminder to smile and make eye contact and to offer supportive comments to colleagues during their presentations. After implementing this, I received positive feedback from a coworker who appreciated my encouragement. Later, my supervisor expressed appreciation for my contributions during meetings. These responses confirmed that my efforts to foster positive interactions were effective. This particular aspect of my interpersonal skills improved significantly, boosting my confidence and reinforcing my commitment to these behavioral changes.
Throughout this process, I realized that some initial action plans needed adjustment to accommodate real-world constraints and opportunities. Flexibility was essential to maintaining momentum and preventing discouragement. Furthermore, reflecting periodically helped me identify which strategies were most impactful and which required modification or abandonment. For example, instead of waiting for an academic course, I found a more immediate and practical workshop, which provided tangible benefits. The practice of self-recording and mindfulness led to greater self-awareness, which is crucial in improving interpersonal interactions.
In conclusion, my efforts to enhance my interpersonal skills through targeted action items have yielded meaningful improvements. I have become more conscious of my nonverbal behaviors, and this awareness has translated into more positive engagement with colleagues and peers. The experience underscored the importance of adaptability in implementing an interpersonal development plan. Moving forward, I intend to continue practicing these skills and seek additional opportunities for professional growth, such as workshops and real-world application.
