Coach Gibbs had the opportunity to learn about leadership from four significant mentors in his life. Each one of these mentors was a successful leader even though they all had different leadership styles. Remember, leadership is the art of motivating people to achieve a common goal, and your leadership style is the WAY you choose to motivate them.
Coach Gibbs believes that discovering and understanding your own leadership style starts with learning from the leaders around you and adopting the techniques that work best. Successful leaders don't have to stick to just one style. Instead, they can change their style depending on the situation. This activity will give you an idea of YOUR leadership style(s).

Leadership is a complex and dynamic aspect of organizational and personal development, which requires self-awareness, adaptability, and continuous learning. Understanding one's leadership style is fundamental in becoming an effective leader, as it influences how one motivates, communicates with, and guides others toward achieving shared goals. This paper explores the process of identifying individual leadership styles, reflecting on practical applications, examining exemplary leaders, and emphasizing the importance of professional and effective communication.
Firstly, the assessment titled "What Sort of Leader Are You?" provides a foundational tool for self-evaluation of leadership preferences. This assessment categorizes leadership styles into well-developed, needs further development, and requires significant growth. Based on my results, I identified my predominant leadership style as transformational, characterized by inspiring and motivating followers through enthusiasm, vision, and commitment. However, I also recognized tendencies toward democratic leadership, which emphasizes participation and collaboration. Conversely, my least developed style was autocratic leadership, which I realize could hinder team innovation and morale if overused.
The reflection on personal leadership styles reveals how these approaches manifest in real-life scenarios. For instance, my transformational leadership style has been particularly effective during team projects where motivating others and fostering a shared vision led to successful outcomes. One specific situation involved leading a community service initiative, where my enthusiasm and clear communication galvanized team members, resulting in high engagement and successful completion of the project ahead of schedule. Conversely, in a different situation, employing more autocratic leadership—such as when urgent decision-making was required—might have expedited outcomes, illustrating the importance of situational adaptability.
Further reflection points to lessons learned from great leaders who exemplify effective traits. For example, Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership was rooted in integrity, humility, and perseverance. His character traits fostered trust and resilience among followers, ultimately influencing large-scale social change. Similarly, contemporary leaders like Elon Musk demonstrate innovative thinking and resilience in driving technological advancements. These examples reinforce the importance of character traits such as integrity, vision, perseverance, and adaptability in effective leadership. Recognizing these characteristics within myself and others underscores the universal qualities that contribute to leadership success.
Effective communication underpins all leadership styles. According to Strayer University’s course content, leadership is significantly enhanced through clear, professional dialogue that fosters trust and aligns team efforts. Proper grammar, clarity, and a professional tone contribute to credibility and influence. In my own leadership practice, I strive to communicate with transparency and respect, adapting my communication style to diverse audiences and situations. This approach not only helps in motivating team members but also mitigates conflicts and promotes a cohesive work environment.
In conclusion, understanding and developing one's leadership style is vital for personal growth and organizational success. Self-assessment tools like the "What Sort of Leader Are You?" questionnaire serve as valuable starting points for this journey. Reflecting on personal experiences and insights gained from exemplary leaders enhances self-awareness and informs future leadership development. Moreover, employing professional communication strategies ensures that leadership efforts are effective, credible, and inspiring.
