According to the BOP’s 2022 report, the federal prison system was operating at approximately 34% above its intended capacity, with an inmate population of over 157,000 against a designed capacity of approximately 117,000 (Federal Bureau of Prisons, 2022). This stark discrepancy illustrates the severity of overcrowding and the strain it exerts on correctional facilities. The relevance of this data lies in its ability to quantify the extent of overcrowding and signal the urgent need for policy reforms aimed at reducing inmate populations and improving facility management.

The second data source I reviewed was a report from the Vera Institute of Justice, which analyzes state-level prison data, including occupancy rates, recidivism, and the social impact of incarceration policies. Their report indicates that in 2021, 46 out of 50 states experienced prison populations exceeding their designed capacities, with some states like Louisiana and Mississippi operating at over 150% capacity (Vera Institute of Justice, 2021).
