This assignment is an actual sales letter sent out by a small local company. Your job is to rewrite and reformat the letter to make it a much stronger letter! Follow the AIDA formula for sales messages to persuade the reader. You can add or take out information to create the perfect letter!
How should you start this assignment?
- Read the letter and find out exactly what the sender’s goal is for the letter. In other words, what does she want the reader to do when they finish the letter?
- Identify the most important parts of the original letter.
- Rewrite the letter using AIDA formula for sales messages (attention, interest, desire, and action). This will be a harder job – you will need to be creative and think about the goals of the letter and the way to persuade the reader. You also may want to research the company online to get more ideas for persuasion. Think about the benefits to the reader and use those to persuade.
- For the actual format of the letter choose the Block or Modified Block letter format (see Appendix in the book for examples). Create a letterhead, and then follow the correct format for a letter. Remember there needs to be at least 3 paragraphs.
- Use current dates within the letter.

For example, instead of simply listing features, focus on how these features benefit the customer directly, thereby creating interest and desire.
Applying the AIDA formula involves a deliberate structuring of your rewrite. The opening paragraph should capture attention, possibly through a compelling question, a startling statistic, or a bold statement. Then, generate interest by discussing how the product or service addresses a problem or fulfills a need that the reader may have. Next, create desire by emphasizing the unique benefits, offering testimonials, or demonstrating value. Finally, include a clear, strong call to action that prompts the reader to take immediate steps, such as calling, visiting a website, or scheduling an appointment.
Formatting the letter professionally is equally important. Choose either the Block or Modified Block format, aligning all components to create a clean, business-like appearance. Include a letterhead with the company's logo, name, address, and contact information. Use the current date and a suitable greeting, such as "Dear Valued Customer." End with a professional closing and your signature, clearly identified as the owner. Proper formatting enhances credibility and encourages the recipient to consider your message seriously.
