Read the following poems from the Album "The Art of (Reading) Poetry" (from Norton Anthology): Archibald Macleish’s “Ars Poetica,” Czesław Miłosz’s “Ars Poetica,” Elizabeth Alexander’s “Ars Poetica #100: I Believe,” Marianne Moore’s “Poetry,” Julia Alvarez’s “Poetry Makes Nothing Happen,” and Billy Collins’s “Introduction to Poetry.” Additionally, read the poems in the Albums “The Author’s Work as Context: Adrienne Rich” (page 911) and “Pat Mora: An Album” (page 971).
Choose one poem from "The Art of (Reading) Poetry" and one poem from either “The Author’s Work as Context: Adrienne Rich” or “Pat Mora: An Album” that you believe will pair well together. Take notes explaining why these two poems complement each other, considering what the art-of-poetry poem says about poetry and the reading experience, how well each poem reflects its own ideas about poetry, and whether your reading experience aligns with those ideas. Also analyze how the two poems compare, focusing on their techniques, diction, figures of speech, characterizations, and rhythm, and how these elements influence your reading experience and their connection to the ideas about poetry expressed in the art-of-poetry poem.
Create a thesis statement for your paper that examines how the poem you selected by Rich or Mora compares with the ideas about poetry expressed in the art-of-poetry poem. Develop supporting paragraphs analyzing specific quotations and details from both poems, explaining how they relate to your thesis. Follow good literary analysis practices as outlined in the course’s lecture “The Essential Moves of Literary Analysis,” and review conventions for writing about literature and poetry.
