Throughout this course, I gained a great deal of knowledge about my chosen institution, Penn State, as well as about the admissions process as a whole. I was not aware of the steps that the university is taking under its current strategic enrollment plan, such as the institution’s commitment to the well-being of its students and “enhancing [their] health” (Penn State, 2020). Despite having graduated from the university only a few short years ago, I was unaware of the true admissions statistics of the main campus at University Park and the nineteen other branch campuses. As for admissions, I was unaware of how much the process is a university-wide endeavor. Without the cooperation and the support of every aspect of an institution, the strategic enrollment plan will not be successful or at least not reach its full potential.
There are so many support services that are available to current and prospective students, which many are not aware of, and it is only beneficial for the students to take advantage of these programs. I see myself using this information in my career as a higher education administrator. I recently obtained a position in the Office of Student Aid at Penn State, and this course has given me a much greater understanding of the role that I truly play. Not only will I be there to assist current and prospective students with their financial aid package, but I will also be there to help execute the strategic enrollment plan and provide support to any areas that may be relevant to my role. Furthermore, my current career goal is to become an academic advisor.
Prior to this course, I was in the dark about how much of this information is relevant in every higher education role; however, now I have a better understanding, and I am more prepared for that which lies before me. This insight emphasizes the importance of alignment and communication across departments such as admissions, financial aid, and student services to meet institutional goals. Furthermore, the awareness of actual enrollment statistics at Penn State’s diverse campuses—main campus and branch locations—provides a clearer picture of the overall student body and highlights potential areas for targeted outreach and recruitment strategies.
Support services play a crucial role in student retention and success, yet many students remain unaware of the full spectrum of assistance offered. As a future higher education administrator, this knowledge enhances my capability to advocate for and improve the visibility of these services. For instance, programs related to mental health, career counseling, academic advising, and financial literacy are vital to student success and are instrumental in fostering a supportive campus climate. In my current role in the Office of Student Aid, I am now better equipped to assist students with their financial packages and understand how financial aid strategies fit within broad enrollment goals. This holistic understanding will enable me to contribute meaningfully to strategic initiatives aimed at increasing retention and graduation rates.
My career aspiration to become an academic advisor is further supported by the insights gained in this course. Effective advising requires an understanding of institutional priorities and resources, which I now appreciate more deeply. Advisors serve as vital links between students and institutional goals, guiding students through academic pathways while aligning their personal ambitions with university resources and strategic priorities. The course has underscored that successful higher education administration demands a proactive, informed approach that considers the multifaceted nature of student needs and institutional objectives.
In summary, this course has enriched my understanding of strategic enrollment management’s role within the broader spectrum of higher education administration. It has highlighted the importance of collaborative planning, comprehensive student support, and strategic resource allocation. Moving forward, I am motivated to leverage this knowledge in my professional endeavors, particularly in enhancing student services and supporting institutional growth at Penn State and beyond. The integration of strategic planning with student-centered practices is key to fostering sustainable institutional success and improving student lives.
