Becoming an early childhood professional is a complex process. There are many areas of knowledge and skill to develop. There are understandings, attitudes, and dispositions that are vital in helping you support the diverse needs of young children and families. No wonder professional development is a lifelong process. There is much to know —including recognizing the need to be open to and aware of changes in society and changes in the field that impact young children and families.
This Application will help you to focus on specific areas, or competencies, that are part of the professional development of all early childhood professionals and to target those areas of special interest or concern to you. To complete this Application, do the following: Read and Reflect Carefully read Figure 1.5, "Seventeen Competencies for Becoming a Professional," on page 26 in the Morrison course text. As you read the description of each competency, stop to consider your own level of knowledge and familiarity with this area. As a student of child development and a lifelong learner, keep in mind that you will always be in the process of learning more and becoming more capable in each area of competency.
Set Goals With the seventeen competencies and your personal reflection in mind, respond to the following three points: Summarize how you can use these competencies as a checklist of goals to support your professional growth. Choose three of the seventeen competencies you consider, at present, to be the most important professional goals for you to focus on in order to increase your professional growth. Explain your plan for how to raise your level of knowledge and skill in each of these three competencies. Choose three competencies other than those you identified above that relate most closely to your current thoughts about the career direction you would like to follow in the early childhood field.

Introduction
Becoming a competent and effective early childhood professional involves developing a broad set of knowledge, skills, and dispositions that support the developmental and educational needs of young children and their families. The professional journey is ongoing, requiring continuous reflection, goal-setting, and learning. The competencies outlined in Figure 1.5 serve as a valuable framework for guiding personal and professional growth in this dynamic field. This paper discusses how these competencies can be used as a checklist for professional development, identifies three key competencies I aim to focus on, and explores three additional competencies aligned with my career ambitions, alongside my specific goals and strategies for mastery.
Using Competencies as a Goals Checklist
The seventeen competencies delineated in Morrison’s framework can act as an effective checklist to evaluate and direct my continuous professional growth. Each competency encourages self-assessment and reflection on current skills and knowledge, revealing areas needing improvement and growth opportunities. By systematically reviewing these competencies, I can prioritize areas for development, set concrete goals, and track my progress over time. Moreover, this framework ensures that my professional development remains aligned with industry standards, societal needs, and best practices in early childhood education. It emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning, adaptability, and cultural competence, which are all essential for staying responsive to changing societal contexts and educational paradigms.
Three Competencies for Immediate Focus
Among the seventeen competencies, I have identified three as my current priorities: (1) Building Positive Relationships, (2) Reflective Practice, and (3) Cultural Competence. Focus on these areas will help me create nurturing environments, improve my teaching strategies, and serve diverse populations more effectively.
Building Positive Relationships
Effective relationships with children, families, and colleagues form the foundation of successful early childhood practice. To enhance my skills in this area, I plan to engage in ongoing communication training, participate in mentorship programs, and seek feedback from supervisors and peers. Additionally, I will read literature on relationship-building and practice active listening and empathy in daily interactions to strengthen these bonds.
Reflective Practice
Reflection is critical in identifying strengths and areas for growth. To deepen my reflective skills, I will maintain a professional journal, regularly review my teaching practices, and participate in peer reflection groups. Attending workshops and pursuing professional certifications that emphasize reflective methodologies will also support this goal.
Cultural Competence

In addition to my focus areas, I recognize the importance of competencies like (1) Supporting Children’s Development, (2) Planning and Implementing Curriculum, and (3) Communicating Effectively. These competencies are closely related to my goal of becoming a preschool educator specializing in inclusive practices.
Supporting Children’s Development
This competency is fundamental for fostering children's emotional, social, and cognitive growth. It will prepare me for roles that require designing developmentally appropriate activities and assessments in inclusive classrooms. My goal is to deepen my understanding of child development theories through coursework and practical experiences. I aim to develop individualized learning plans for children with diverse needs by attending specialized training and collaborating with specialists.
Planning and Implementing Curriculum
The ability to plan meaningful, age-appropriate lessons is essential for a successful educator in early childhood settings. To enhance this skill, I will pursue professional development in curriculum design, participate in workshops on lesson planning, and incorporate evidence-based practices. My goal is to develop innovative, child-centered curricula that promote inquiry and play-based learning.
Communicating Effectively
Effective communication with children, families, and team members fosters trust and cooperation. To improve in this domain, I will attend communication skills workshops and practice clear, concise, and empathetic interactions. My goal is to become proficient in family engagement strategies and develop bilingual communication skills to serve diverse linguistic backgrounds.
