Access a news article pertaining to your assigned topic concerning the Texas state government; topic selection will be in class. You need to analyze the article and make specific and direct connections to two (2) concepts that we have covered in class. In an effort to include information about the last general election in Texas, held in November 2018, articles can date from within the last year. Acceptable sources are: 1) The Texas Tribune or 2) The New York Times. If you are interested in another source, send an email to Professor Giglio for approval. You are to include the following criteria in your assignment:
- Article title and source – 5 points: Use the MLA style of citation for your work cited information.
- Summary – 5 points: Briefly and in your own words, summarize the content of the article. Connect the article to two (2) separate and distinct concepts that we have covered in class.

Write your paper in paragraph form using good sentence structure with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Write the paper in your own words. If you need to use a short quote, cite properly. It should be turned in via eCampus in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format. For the oral presentation, members of your group will be confirming, in writing, that you have provided a summary of the article and they will identify a concept that you are linking your article to. Topics include: Chapter 4 – Political Parties, Chapter 5 – Campaigns and Elections, Chapter 7 – The Politics of Interest Groups.
Paper For Above instruction
The assignment requires selecting a recent news article related to the Texas state government, specifically from reputable sources such as The Texas Tribune or The New York Times, within the last year, focusing on the October 2018 general election or subsequent political developments. The core task involves analyzing this article by summarizing its content, then making two explicit connections to distinct concepts covered in class—namely, chapters 4, 5, or 7 covering political parties, campaigns and elections, or interest groups.
In the summarized portion, the student should concisely distill the article’s main points and relevant details, framing them in their own words. The analysis then extends to defining each of the two concepts separately, clearly explaining how the article exemplifies each one—by citing specific details or examples from the text. For instance, if the article discusses a recent election event, it might illustrate concepts like campaign strategies or interest group influence in Texas politics. Conversely, if the article discusses shifts in party alignment, that could exemplify party polarization or realignment. This process deepens understanding of the material and demonstrates ability to connect theory to real-world political developments.
The paper should be approximately two pages, double-spaced, with standard academic formatting (1-inch margins, 12-point font). Proper MLA citations must be included for the article. The final deliverable involves a formal written submission and an in-class presentation, where group members will verify that each student provided the article summary and correctly linked their analysis to a class concept, explaining it clearly in their own words within a five-minute window.
