The core purpose of meditation is to cultivate mindfulness, which allows individuals to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without judgment (Brown & Ryan, 2003).
One of the primary benefits of meditation is stress reduction. Research indicates that regular meditation practice can decrease the levels of cortisol, the hormone associated with stress (Goyal et al., 2014). This reduction in stress contributes to improved emotional health by alleviating anxiety and depression symptoms. A second significant benefit is enhanced focus and attention. Meditation practices, especially mindfulness meditation, have been shown to improve cognitive flexibility and concentration, thereby supporting better performance in academic and professional settings (Lutz, Slagter, Dunne, & Davidson, 2008). Thirdly, meditation is beneficial for physical health, particularly in lowering blood pressure and improving heart health.
