The intention of this capstone paper is to facilitate a comprehensive self-assessment of my competencies across the eight core domains for public health professionals, as delineated by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). These domains include:analytical methods/statistics, policy development/program planning, communication, cultural competency, community dimensions of practice, public health sciences, financial planning and management, and leadership. This structured self-reflection not only provides an overview of my current capabilities but also guides the formulation of a tailored learning plan aimed at enhancing areas of weakness and consolidating strengths to ensure ongoing professional development in public health.

Introduction

Public health is a multidisciplinary field that mandates a diverse skill set to effectively address health disparities, implement policies, and improve population health outcomes. As a public health professional or student, evaluating one's competencies across the core domains is fundamental to identifying learning needs and ensuring continuous professional growth. This capstone paper presents a detailed self-assessment aligned with the eight core competency domains and outlines a strategic plan for ongoing development, emphasizing the importance of both individual and community health improvements.

Self-Assessment in the Eight Domains of Public Health Practice

1. Analytical Methods/Statistics: I possess foundational skills in epidemiological data analysis, utilizing statistical software such as SPSS and R to interpret health data. However, I recognize the need to deepen my understanding of advanced analytical techniques, including multivariate analysis and data visualization, to better inform public health decisions.

2. Policy Development and Program Planning: My experience involves assisting in the development of health promotion programs and understanding policymaking processes at local levels. Nonetheless, I aim to strengthen my skills in policy evaluation and strategic planning to craft evidence-based interventions effectively.

3. Communication: Effective communication is crucial in public health. I have developed skills in creating educational materials and delivering oral presentations. To enhance my impact, I plan to improve my skills in persuasive communication and utilize digital media platforms for broader outreach.

4. Cultural Competency: I strive to provide culturally sensitive services by engaging with diverse populations and understanding their unique health beliefs. Yet, I seek more formal training in cultural humility and the social determinants of health to better serve marginalized communities.

Development of a Learning Plan
