Poverty is a persistent public policy issue that has shaped numerous social programs aimed at alleviating economic hardship. The origins of welfare policies, such as the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), trace back to mid-20th-century efforts to combat widespread poverty following the Great Depression. The Social Security Act of 1935 was a landmark legislation that established foundational programs for economic security, particularly targeting vulnerable populations like the elderly and unemployed (Meyer, 2016). Over time, policymakers introduced TANF in 1996 to replace Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), aiming to promote self-sufficiency among low-income families (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2021). Despite these efforts, poverty remains a significant issue; critics argue that current policies inadequately address root causes like structural inequality and lack of access to quality education. If I were president, I would modify poverty policies by increasing investments in education, healthcare, and job training programs to create sustainable pathways out of poverty. These changes could enhance the effectiveness of existing social safety nets and reduce long-term poverty levels.
