The social movement topic that I have identified for this course is the Civil Rights Movement. This movement was a pivotal effort aimed at ending racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans in the United States. Throughout this course, I learned that the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum in the 1950s and 1960s, fueled by the systemic injustices faced by Black Americans, including disenfranchisement, unequal access to education, employment, and public accommodations. Key issues prompting this movement included racial segregation, voting rights restrictions, police brutality, and economic inequality. Leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and countless others spearheaded efforts to promote racial justice and equality. The movement's strategies included peaceful protests, sit-ins, boycotts, and legislative advocacy, leading to landmark legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. These efforts significantly transformed American social and legal landscapes, promoting greater inclusion and challenging persistent racist structures.

My understanding of this movement deepened as I learned about the perseverance and resilience of those involved despite violent backlash and social opposition. The movement revealed the importance of collective action and moral clarity in addressing social injustice. It also highlighted the role of grassroots activism and the influence of media in shaping public opinion and policy changes. Recognizing the sacrifices of countless individuals has reinforced my commitment to promoting equity and justice in my community. I believe that such social movements are crucial in fostering societal progress and in reminding us of the ongoing need for activism and policy reform to combat racial inequality.
