As the War continues, social workers in all branches of the military are helping families and military personnel prepare for, and cope with, the ravages of war. They do so through a range of preventive and clinical services and programs, including family-support programs and mental-health counseling. When soldiers return home, social workers in the Department of Veterans Affairs are prepared to help them — and their families — reconnect with society and with each other, and to get psychological help if needed. I come from a military family where my husband has been deployed 7 times, and every time it gets worse, so for this reason I have chosen this field so I can help our veterans and their families connect and help with as much as I can. Also, I hope to work in the area of HIV-infected soldiers since I am currently doing that at my present work and I love my job.

My specific populations of interest are the military, veterans, and the HIV-infected community. I aspire to serve these populations professionally by assisting soldiers returning from war zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan, helping them cope with injuries like PTSD and traumatic brain injury, and supporting their families in accessing community resources such as childcare, transportation, and financial support. Many soldiers face emotional and physical trauma upon returning home, and social workers play a crucial role in ensuring they receive comprehensive care and community reintegration services.

This scholarship will be instrumental in helping me achieve my academic goals by alleviating financial burdens that hinder my ability to pursue further education in social work. I have been married for seven years; my husband will retire next year after serving 20 years in the military. His deployment in another state creates financial hardships for our household, as he maintains rent in El Paso, Texas, while we pay our mortgage and manage household expenses in California. I work part-time as a case manager for HIV patients and am a full-time mother to our five-year-old son who has autism and needs constant attention. We are also foster parents to two teenage girls, which brings us immense joy but adds to our responsibilities.

Attending school online allows me to balance my commitments, but the financial strain remains significant. I already have student loans from previous education, and additional financial support would help reduce stress and enable me to focus more on my studies and professional development.
