Close Analysis Essay: The Idea worth Spreading Length: 3-4 full pages in MLA style ____________________________________________________________________________________ OVERVIEW Known by the catchphrase “ideas worth spreading,” TED is a non-profit organization that devotes itself to spreading powerful ideas that can improve the global community by changing attitudes and lives. You’ve now had the opportunity to view several talks that deal with issues of personal motivation, leadership, confidence, and various kinds of self-improvements. For this essay, you will need to pinpoint which talk you think offers the ideas most “worth spreading” and then argue why the talk is valuable for a specific social group in particular (groups might include: women, African American men, high school students, convicts, business owners, etc.) Please be advised that “everyone” is not an acceptable answer for this assignment even if you believe that to be true.
I’m looking for specificity. To do this essay well, you will need to have a very clear understanding of the argument of the talk, a clear rationale for why you’ve selected this particular social group, and make a persuasive connection that shows how the ideas expressed in the talk would help members of this group confront the challenges they typically face. Research is not required for this essay, but doing some might help you make your argument.
THESIS Your thesis should contain the following elements: 1) the name of the author and talk, 2) the main argument of the talk, 3) which group stands to benefit, 4) and why. For example: Single mothers would benefit from watching Brené Brown’s talk on “The Power of Vulnerability” because her suggestion that people can improve their happiness and self-worth from taking chances and letting themselves “truly be seen” will help them heal from broken relationships and learn to trust again.
