Choosing a specific health condition to explore for this project offers an opportunity to gain deeper understanding of its implications both personally and societally. For the purpose of this paper, I have selected type 2 diabetes mellitus—a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion. This condition has become increasingly prevalent worldwide and affects millions, making it a compelling subject for examination.

Type 2 diabetes holds personal significance for me because of its pervasiveness and the profound impact it has on individuals' health and well-being. Having witnessed friends and family members managing this condition, I am particularly interested in understanding its underlying mechanisms, preventative strategies, and management techniques. Moreover, I am intrigued by the social and economic burdens associated with diabetes, which underscore the importance of awareness, early detection, and effective intervention.

On a broader scale, type 2 diabetes is a major public health concern. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), approximately 463 million adults worldwide were living with diabetes in 2019, a number projected to rise significantly in future decades. The disease affects individuals across various age groups, but its prevalence increases markedly with age, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles. The high prevalence contributes to substantial healthcare costs; for example, the American Diabetes Association estimates that the direct and indirect costs related to diabetes in the United States alone exceed $327 billion annually. These costs include hospitalizations, medications, outpatient care, and lost productivity.

The impact of diabetes on quality of life and life expectancy is profound. Individuals with poorly controlled diabetes face increased risks of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, neuropathy, and retinopathy, which can lead to amputations and blindness. Moreover, the disease can significantly reduce lifespan if not managed effectively. While advances in medical treatment have improved management strategies—such as insulin therapy, oral medications, and lifestyle modifications—chronic complications persist as a major challenge.

Additionally, diabetes poses a threat to public health beyond individual patients. The disease's complications often require extensive medical intervention, creating a substantial burden on healthcare systems. The high treatment costs contribute to economic disparities, as access to quality care can be limited for lower-income populations. Furthermore, the disease's association with lifestyle factors such as obesity and physical inactivity emphasizes the importance of public health initiatives aimed at prevention through education, nutrition, and physical activity promotion.

In conducting research, I used search terms such as "global prevalence of type 2 diabetes," "economic impact of diabetes," "diabetes complications," and "diabetes management treatments." These terms helped me access scholarly articles, government health reports, and reputable sources like the CDC and the World Health Organization, providing reliable and current information about the disease's scope and significance.
