Proposed Student Congress Bill to Reduce Plastic Waste on Campus

Whereas, recent studies have shown that plastic waste constitutes over 30% of trash found on university campuses, leading to pollution in nearby waterways and harm to wildlife (Environmental Protection Agency, 2021);

Whereas, single-use plastics such as water bottles, straws, and packaging contribute significantly to this waste, and their usage is still prevalent among students and staff within campus facilities (National Recycling Coalition, 2022);

Whereas, implementing sustainable alternatives, such as reusable water bottles, biodegradable packaging, and promoting water refill stations, has been shown to decrease plastic waste by up to 50% in similar university environments (Green Campus Initiative, 2020);

Therefore, be it resolved by this Student Congress:

• That the university shall prohibit the sale and distribution of single-use plastics on campus, including water bottles, straws, and utensils, effective from the start of the next academic year;
• That the university shall install additional water refill stations around campus to promote the use of reusable bottles;
• That the university will launch an awareness campaign to educate students and staff about the benefits of using sustainable alternatives and proper waste disposal practices.

This legislation aims to promote environmental sustainability, reduce campus plastic waste, and foster environmentally responsible behaviors among the university community.
