The escalating threat of antibiotic resistance poses a significant challenge to global public health, necessitating concerted efforts to promote responsible antibiotic use. As a nurse practitioner (NP), I am uniquely positioned to influence antibiotic stewardship through direct patient care, health education, and advocacy. My role encompasses prescribing responsibly, educating patients on appropriate antibiotic use, and collaborating with healthcare teams to implement best practices. By leveraging these responsibilities, I aim to contribute effectively to the CDC's antibiotic resistance initiative, which seeks to curb misuse and overuse of antibiotics that drive resistance patterns. Literature supports that nurse practitioners play a pivotal role in antimicrobial stewardship programs, often leading initiatives to optimize prescribing and enhance patient education (MacDougall & Polk, 2005; Kabbani et al., 2019). My view is that through targeted interventions and leadership, nurse practitioners can significantly impact the antibiotic resistance dilemma (Macaulay et al., 2018).

The CDC’s overarching goal is to slow the emergence of resistant bacteria, limit the spread of resistant infections, and enhance the development of new antibiotics and diagnostics (CDC, 2020). One key strategy I will promote in my advanced practice role is antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs), which aim to optimize antibiotic usage by ensuring appropriate selection, dosage, and duration of therapy. Supporting literature indicates that ASPs are effective in reducing unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions and improving patient outcomes (Baur et al., 2017; McGregor et al., 2018). As an NP, I can support this strategy by integrating stewardship principles into clinical practice, participatory education, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

To promote the CDC’s ASPs, I will develop three specific activities. First, I will implement patient education initiatives focusing on the importance of appropriate antibiotic use and adherence to prescribed therapies. Evidence demonstrates that informed patients are less likely to demand antibiotics unnecessarily and more likely to comply with treatment regimens (McGregor et al., 2014). Second, I will engage in prescribing practices that prioritize narrow-spectrum antibiotics whenever appropriate and review antibiotic appropriateness based on culture results and clinical guidelines. A robust review process is shown to reduce broad-spectrum antibiotic use, thereby decreasing resistance development (Costelloe et al., 2010). Third, I will participate in routine antimicrobial stewardship rounds with interdisciplinary teams to review ongoing antibiotic treatments, monitor resistance patterns, and provide real-time feedback to prescribers. Literature supports that active participation in stewardship rounds improves prescribing behaviors and antimicrobial use (Wilde et al., 2018). These actions collectively support CDC’s strategy and demonstrate my commitment to responsible antibiotic stewardship.
