Controversial Issues for Term Paper The following is a list of available research topics. Please read the Chicago Manual of Style rules in Mary Lynn Rampolla's A Pocket Guide to Writing in History. Rampolla discusses thesis development and the use and identification of primary and secondary sources within this book as well.

- Hollywood’s active participation in the war effort
- Women and the war effort (WWI or WWII)
- Truman’s decision to drop the Atomic Bomb, and its effect on U. S. national policy
- The reason for the Truman Doctrine
- The causes and blame for the Cold War
- The dichotomy of the image of the fabulous 1950s
- The impact of the social/political events of 1968
- The impact of the news media and/or the peace movement on American involvement in Vietnam
Term Paper Expectations:
The term paper requires you to critically analyze primary sources and research related secondary sources before writing. It offers an opportunity to develop research and writing skills and synthesize knowledge about a controversial issue.
To earn maximum points, your paper must:
1. Consider one of the above controversial issues.
2. Utilize at least four primary sources (e.g., letters, diaries, publications) related to this issue. Review Rampolla’s guidance on identifying primary sources.
3. Consult two valid secondary sources that help develop your thesis. Exclude Wikipedia and the course textbook Give Me Liberty as secondary sources.
4. Construct a thesis statement based on the primary and secondary sources.
5. Include an introduction, body, and conclusion.
6. Organize your paragraphs around a single topic, with about eight sentences each.
7. Avoid spelling, grammatical, punctuation, and language errors.
8. Develop at least five full pages of typed text, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, using Times New Roman 12-point font. Include page numbers, title, and author information. Your title page, endnotes, and bibliography are not counted in the page total.
9. Use the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) for citing quotations and paraphrases. A separate, properly formatted bibliography must list all sources used.
