In this journal assignment, I will explore my personal reactions and strategies for addressing ethical dilemmas and multicultural barriers in clinical counseling, aligning my approach with my chosen theoretical framework—Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Recognizing and preparing for potential challenges in adhering to ethical standards and responding effectively to multicultural considerations is vital for professional growth and competent client care.
Ethical Codes: Challenges and Strategies
One ethical code that I anticipate will be particularly challenging involves maintaining client confidentiality, especially in situations where clients may disclose intentions that could potentially harm themselves or others. According to the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics, confidentiality must be preserved unless there is imminent danger, but managing these boundaries requires careful judgment and consistent application of ethical standards (ACA, 2014). To address this challenge, I plan to establish clear boundaries and explain confidentiality limits during informed consent, ensuring clients understand the circumstances under which confidentiality may be breached, such as in cases of harm or abuse. Regular supervision and consultation will serve as additional safeguards to ensure I adhere to ethical guidelines.
