Students will select a new or emerging technology and investigate its impact on culture through a multimedia presentation. The project involves analyzing questions inspired by Neil Postman about the societal and cultural implications of technology, including: identifying the problem the technology addresses, understanding who is affected, foreseeing potential harms and new problems, assessing changes in political power and language, and researching scholarly sources to support findings. The project is conducted in stages: initial topic selection, annotated bibliography of at least six scholarly resources, outline development, creation of multimedia media, submission of a draft presentation for feedback, and final revisions leading to a complete multimedia presentation with citations and a Works Cited page. The assignment emphasizes interdisciplinary analysis, critical thinking about technology’s cultural influence, and skill development in research, synthesis, and multimedia communication.

The intersection of technology and culture is a complex and multifaceted domain that requires careful examination to understand how emerging technologies influence societal norms, values, and behaviors. For this project, I have chosen to investigate the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with a focus on its role in reshaping human interaction, work, and ethical standards. AI, as a rapidly advancing technology, exemplifies many of the broader societal questions highlighted by Neil Postman, making it an ideal subject for exploration. I selected AI because of its pervasive integration into daily life—ranging from automated customer service to autonomous vehicles—and its profound potential to alter cultural practices, economic structures, and communication paradigms.

My preliminary hypothesis suggests that AI addresses the problem of increasing efficiency and managing information overload in modern society. However, I anticipate that it also introduces significant challenges, such as job displacement, privacy concerns, and ethical dilemmas surrounding decision-making autonomy. To thoroughly analyze these issues, I plan to adopt a systematic research approach, starting with scholarly articles on AI's societal impact, ethical frameworks, and policy responses. I will also explore interdisciplinary sources from fields like philosophy, communication studies, and sociology to understand AI’s influence on language, culture, and human values.

Several obstacles might impede my investigation. These include the rapidly evolving nature of AI technology, which can make current research quickly outdated, and the difficulty of accessing proprietary or non-public data about AI deployment. Additionally, ethical debates surrounding AI often involve subjective judgments, complicating objective analysis. Nevertheless, by relying on reputable academic publications, government reports, and expert analyses, I aim to construct a balanced and scholarly presentation that critically assesses AI’s cultural ramifications.
