Over the past six weeks, my understanding of psychology has significantly evolved. Initially, I viewed psychology primarily as a field focused on diagnosing mental health disorders and understanding human behavior in clinical settings. However, through recent coursework, I have come to appreciate its broader scope, including its application to everyday life and social dynamics. This expanded perception emphasizes psychology as a window into understanding human thoughts, emotions, motivations, and behaviors in various contexts beyond clinical environments.

Three specific theories or topics that resonated deeply with me and can be applied to both my personal and professional life include the Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT), Social Learning Theory, and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Firstly, CBT has illuminated the importance of thought patterns in influencing emotions and behaviors. Recognizing thought distortions can help me manage stress and foster healthier relationships, both at work and in personal interactions. Secondly, Social Learning Theory, which emphasizes learning through observation and imitation, has helped me understand that behaviors are often shaped by social contexts. I plan to utilize this insight to promote positive behaviors in team environments and peer interactions. Lastly, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs underscores the importance of addressing fundamental needs before achieving self-actualization. This understanding will guide me in developing more empathetic communication strategies and leadership approaches that prioritize individual needs and motivations in the workplace.

The knowledge gained in this course will significantly influence my approach to social change. Recognizing the power of psychological principles, I am inspired to engage in community initiatives that foster psychological well-being and resilience. For example, implementing programs rooted in CBT techniques can help marginalized populations cope better with stressors and mental health challenges. Moreover, understanding the role of modeling and social influence can facilitate the development of educational campaigns that promote positive behavioral changes. Overall, applying these psychological insights can enhance efforts to create inclusive, supportive environments that drive sustainable social change.
