The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has experienced rapid healthcare development over the past decades, yet significant gaps remain in research addressing local health challenges. To enhance healthcare outcomes for the Saudi population, it is crucial to identify and address these gaps through targeted research initiatives. One such notable gap is the limited understanding of the prevalence and management of mental health disorders among young adults in Saudi Arabia, especially in the context of rapid modernization and cultural shifts (Al-Khathami & Ogbeide, 2020). This proposal aims to investigate the status quo of mental health issues among young Saudis, evaluate current management strategies, and develop culturally sensitive intervention models that can improve patient outcomes across the country.
Research indicates that despite increasing awareness, stigma surrounding mental health remains a significant barrier to seeking treatment in Saudi society (Al-Habeeb et al., 2021). Moreover, existing healthcare services are often ill-equipped to provide culturally appropriate mental health support, exacerbating underdiagnosis and undertreatment. Addressing this gap is critically important because mental health disorders, if left unmanaged, can lead to adverse social, economic, and health consequences such as decreased productivity and increased burden of comorbidities (Al-Qahtani & Al-Shahrani, 2019). The proposed study will utilize mixed methods, combining quantitative surveys to assess prevalence and qualitative interviews to explore barriers to care.
In addition, the study will evaluate the effectiveness of existing mental health intervention programs tailored for youth and develop culturally adapted strategies. This research can benefit policymakers, healthcare providers, and mental health practitioners by providing data-driven insights that inform policy adjustments, resource allocation, and the implementation of culturally sensitive mental health services. The findings may also be applicable to other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries facing similar societal shifts and mental health challenges.
By bridging the current knowledge gap regarding mental health among young adults in Saudi Arabia, this research has the potential to significantly improve early diagnosis rates, reduce stigma, and enhance delivery of mental health services. Implementing culturally tailored interventions based on the findings can lead to more effective management, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes and a healthier future supposition for Saudi youth.
