Effective teamwork and conflict management are essential skills in any collaborative environment. Throughout my experiences working in groups, I have encountered various conflict styles, each influencing the group's dynamic differently. Recognizing these styles has enabled me to develop a more strategic approach to conflict resolution. Moreover, understanding and applying group cohesion strategies foster a more productive and harmonious team environment. This paper discusses the conflict styles I have experienced, how I plan to change my approach in the future, the cohesion strategies I will implement, my decision-making style, and my approach to problem solving based on the insights gained from this course.

Conflict Styles Encountered in Group Work

In my previous group interactions, I frequently encountered accommodating and avoiding conflict styles. The accommodating style involves prioritizing others' needs at the expense of my own, often to maintain harmony. For example, I would often suppress my opinions during disagreements to avoid tension. The avoiding style, on the other hand, involves withdrawing from conflicts altogether, which sometimes led to unresolved issues that hindered progress. Recognizing these styles helped me understand their impact on group cohesion and productivity. According to Thomas and Kilmann's Conflict Mode Instrument, these styles can be effective in specific contexts but may also create stagnation if overused (Thomas & Kilmann, 1974).

Changing Conflict Approaches Based on Learning

Based on what I have learned in this course, my approach to conflict will evolve towards a more assertive and collaborative style.
