CRITICAL THINKING RESEARCH REPORT AND POWERPOINT ASSIGNMENT Lesson Plan MCB2000C Microbiology 01/2023 Research Report and PowerPoint Assignment Lesson Plan COURSE # AND TITLE: â— MCB2000C-DBX-DL01 Microbiology INSTRUCTOR:  Dr. Grisseel Cruz-Espaillat, M.D., PH.D., M.P.H. SPECIFIC TOPIC: Pathology (Professor will assign each student’s disease; check list for your name and assigned topic, found in the Research Report folder, found in the course blackboard shell) LESSON PLAN OVERVIEW:  Students will engage in critical thinking regarding the systems of the human body and pathology in Microbiology, and specifically for the following topics: Viral and bacterial infectious Diseases, Disorders associated with Immune System, Microbial Diseases of the Nervous System, Viral Diseases of the Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems, Microbial Disease of the Respiratory System, Microbial Disease of the Digestive System, Microbial Diseases of the Urinary and Reproductive System. OBJECTIVES: 1. Learn the distinctions and characteristics of the systems 2. Engage in critical thinking through the analysis of the pathologies related (Case Study application) 3. Engage in critical thinking by examining the selected pathology with the prospective systems and credibility of scholar researcher. 4. Engage student interest in prospective major RATIONALE:  Students will benefit by: 1. Performing the critical thinking exercise of exegesis 2. Gaining confidence in by applying what they have learned 3. Executing preliminary research on their prospective major 4. Correlating pattern characteristics of specific systems of the human body. RESOURCES / MATERIALS: FNU Library, Textbook, Internet access. All students are required to submit a copy draft of the written and PowerPoint assignment to the Writing Center, at least a week before the due date. LESSON CONTENT: (INCLUDE TIMES ALLOWED FOR COVERING TOPICS) Students will be assigned a pathology on the 1st week of the course (Check Pathology Assigned List document in the RESEARCH REPORT folder); pathology assigned will be used to develop a Research Document Report and PowerPoint by apply required criteria information as title topics to be discussed (Read page 5,6 as the rubric has additional information that is required). The research report must have at least 5 pages of written content (do not include the title page, abstract page, reference). For the PowerPoint it is required at least 10 slides covering the following: 1. Define the disease 2. Demographics of the Disease 3. Cause of the disease 4. Signs & Symptoms of the disease (If applicable, include stages, levels, or types related to the disease) 5. Laboratory findings (include, all blood test names, genetic test, urine test, etc.; compare normal versus abnormal levels that will confirm the disease) 6. Images of the Disease (X-ray, MRI, CT scans, PET scans); all images must be cited in APA format and referenced in the reference page of the report and PowerPoint. 7. Treatment for the disease (this includes name of medications, dosage, side effects, alternative medications) 8. Diet for the patient 9. Prognosis of the disease 10. Include images of the disease within the slides. All students must apply APA format. References must be within the last 5 years and no less than 10 references. All references must be cited throughout the research report and PowerPoint. All PowerPoint slides must have citations at the bottom of each slide; read APA PowerPoint explanation, found in the Research Report folder in blackboard. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited; all references must be properly acknowledged. Students engaging in plagiarism will face academic sanctions including failing the assignment or course. Review the rubric for grading criteria. Each student will submit both assignments for grading: 15% of the grade for PowerPoint using the MOP rubric, and 5% for the Research Report. Both are due by specified deadlines during the course. Submissions must follow APA 7th edition style. For further assistance, contact the Writing Center Coordinator, Professor Ileana Torres, via email. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Critical Thinking Research Report And Powerpoint Assignment Lesson Pl

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the critical thinking research report and PowerPoint assignment designed for the microbiology course (MCB2000C). The assignment aims to foster students’ analytical skills by engaging them in in-depth research on assigned pathologies, with particular focus on systemic diseases affecting the human body. The project emphasizes the application of scientific knowledge through detailed reports and visually appealing presentations, all structured within an APA format adhering to academic integrity standards.

The purpose of this assignment is to enhance students' understanding of microbiological diseases and their systemic implications. By investigating specific pathologies, students will develop their ability to define diseases, analyze demographics, identify causes, recognize signs and symptoms, interpret laboratory findings, evaluate imaging results, explore treatment options, suggest dietary considerations, and assess prognosis. Such a comprehensive approach encourages critical thinking through integration of research, synthesis of information, and application to real-world scenarios.

Students are required to prepare a research report of at least five pages of substantive content (excluding title, abstract, references) that explores the assigned pathology in detail. The report should include thorough descriptions of the disease, relevant demographic data, etiological factors, clinical manifestations, laboratory diagnostics, imaging studies, treatment plans, dietary recommendations, and prognostic outlooks. This structured presentation facilitates a holistic understanding of the disease and its systemic impact. The report must incorporate at least ten references published within the last five years, cited appropriately throughout the document and listed accordingly in APA format.

Parallel to the report, students will create a PowerPoint presentation comprising at least 10 slides covering key aspects of the disease. The slides should sequentially address: definition, demographics, cause, signs and symptoms, laboratory findings, imaging, treatment, diet, and prognosis. Each slide must include citations at the bottom, referencing the sources of information in APA style. All visual materials, such as X-rays, MRI scans, CT, and PET images, must be cited properly and included either within the slides or as an appendix in the report. The presentation aims to visually synthesize critical points and enhance comprehension through images and clear, concise messaging.

Throughout the assignment, strict adherence to APA 7th edition formatting, proper citation practices, and ethical writing are mandatory. Plagiarism of any form results in serious academic penalties, including possible course failure or disciplinary action. Deadlines are stringent, requiring early submission of drafts for review to ensure quality and compliance. This comprehensive assessment not only assesses students’ research capabilities but also their ability to effectively communicate scientific information to diverse audiences, preparing them for professional roles in healthcare and microbiology fields.
