Data Exercise #3 Due at the end of week 7 Format of the Project: The Data Exercise must be posted to the LEO Student Assignments as attachments are limited to a maximum of two files in doc, docx, xls, xlsx, or rtf formats. Other formats are not acceptable, will not be reviewed or graded. Hand-written and scanned works, PDF, JPG files, and files posted in Google Drive will not be accepted or graded. The paper should be written in APA style research paper format. No more than 20% of the text should consist of quotes.
Use of APA citation methodology is required for all parts of the assignment. Written projects must be:
- Typed, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font, with margins no wider than one inch.
- Have footnotes or endnotes with correct citations.
- Include a bibliography of sources used, with each entry containing the author, title, city and state of publisher, publisher's name, year, and page numbers.
- Prepared using word processing software (Microsoft Word preferred).
The Data Exercise #3 consists of two parts:
Part 1: GDP in Different Countries (50% of the grade)
Complete the following exercise:
- Go to the World Development Indicators database. Click on World Development Indicators.
- Select 15 countries for your project by checking the checkboxes under Country.
- Select the data series GDP (current US$) and Population (Total) under Series.
- Select the most recent year available under Time.
- Choose Layout on the upper left, with Orientation set to “Page” for Time, “Column” for Series, and “Row” for Country.
- Retrieve data and click “Table” to view it.
- Use “Download options” and select “Data on this page only – formatted” to export the data in Excel or copy it into your report.
- Fill in the provided table with the data.
- Present the table in your project and calculate the per capita GDP for the most recent year using the formula: Per Capita GDP = GDP / Population.
Write a short, approximately one-page, double-spaced report analyzing your results:
- List the countries ordered from highest to lowest per capita GDP.
- Discuss whether the total GDP ranking matches the per capita GDP ranking and explain any differences.
- Analyze and reflect on the significance of this data and what you learned from the exercise.
Part 2: Index of Economic Freedom (50% of the grade)
Access the Heritage Foundation's website and locate the Index of Economic Freedom:
- Find the Rank and Overall Score of economic freedom for each of the countries selected in Part 1. Present this as a table.
- Obtain scores for the categories: business freedom, trade freedom, financial freedom, and property rights for these countries. Present as tables.
- Compare the overall economic freedom rank and scores with the order of countries based on per capita GDP from Part 1.
- Write a one-page, double-spaced report analyzing these results, discussing the importance of these rankings, and reflecting on the insights gained from the assignment.
