Students will select one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal and/or target goal. Students will research the goal, international agencies currently addressing the goal, and the implications of the goal in the field of human development. They will present their projects at a campus-wide symposium to inform peers about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and their relevance in human development. Students will then create either an awareness campaign to raise global awareness or a service project that can be implemented locally.
The project must be discussed with the professor throughout the semester. A total of 10 hours of community service—comprising research, project preparation, and presentation at the end-of-semester symposium—must be documented through the MDC iCED process. The project will be formatted as a scientific poster presentation with a minimum of 1,000 words, following APA guidelines. Proper citations and a reference section are required.
The project should include:
- A brief introduction of the UN Sustainable Development Goals
- The specific goal or target goal chosen
- The significance of this goal in the context of human development, detailing how the issue impacts individual development

Access to quality education influences health outcomes, economic stability, social cohesion, and the empowerment of marginalized groups. International agencies actively involved in promoting quality education include UNESCO, UNICEF, and the World Bank. UNESCO's Education 2030 Framework for Action emphasizes inclusive education and lifelong learning, aiming to eradicate disparities and improve educational quality worldwide. UNICEF focuses on children’s rights to education, particularly in conflict-affected regions, through initiatives like school feeding programs and educational support for refugees. The World Bank invests heavily in educational infrastructure and policy reforms to increase access and quality. Despite significant efforts, challenges persist—such as resource limitations, geopolitical conflicts, and cultural barriers—that impede progress toward achieving universal quality education.
The implications of insufficient education in human development are extensive. Lower educational attainment correlates with limited employment opportunities, lower income levels, and poorer health outcomes. Moreover, lack of education hampers the development of skills critical for participation in a globalized economy, thus perpetuating socioeconomic disparities. Girls and marginalized communities often face additional barriers, including gender-based discrimination and cultural norms that restrict educational access.
To address these issues effectively, innovative strategies are necessary. Increasing awareness about the importance of education can mobilize communities and policymakers to prioritize funding and policy reforms.
