Diagnosis Of Depression In Early Childhood
Diagnosis of Depression in Early Childhood
Choose a topic in Child Psychology – there are no other guidelines, except that the topic must concern some aspect of development (social, cognitive, physical) during the period of the life span between infancy and middle childhood. Narrow your topic to, for example, diagnosis of autism in early childhood, or treatment strategies. You will then formulate a research question. Find at least THREE PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCH ARTICLES that apply to your topic. You MUST identify these articles through the library databases, such as PsychInfo or Academic Search Complete. You may NOT use a google, yahoo, or any other general internet search. You MUST use research articles (i.e., articles that present the results of a research study). You may NOT use general opinion articles, theoretical articles, or any other type of articles. You may NOT use newspaper, magazine, blog, or any other type of non-peer-reviewed article. These articles must have been published in the last 10 years. Using the 3 research articles, you will create a 15-20 minute PowerPoint presentation discussing your topic. State your research question, and describe the 3 research studies (What was their hypothesis? Summarize the sample, methods, and findings). End with a conclusion that includes a summary of your findings, any strengths and weaknesses in the literature, and future directions. Please also include a practical application of the research (e.g., better understanding and treatment of your chosen developmental disorder, application to social or personal issues, etc.). You will also need a title slide and a references slide, formatted in APA (please see the example, with voiceover instructions, on Blackboard). You should have a minimum of 10 slides in your presentation but will most likely need more. Be sure to avoid the common pitfall of putting too much text on your slides – most information should be in bullet points, or visual such as graphs or videos, with your auditory presentation providing explanations of the information. In addition to creating the PowerPoint slides, you will record yourself presenting the slides in auditory format (i.e., a presentation voice-over). Pretend that you are presenting your final presentation to the class, and be sure to explain the background, history, and concepts behind your topic. Make your presentation engaging and DO NOT read the information directly from your slides verbatim. You are encouraged to incorporate short demonstrations, videos, and examples into your presentations. Within your presentation, you should also cite at least the 3 primary research articles that you chose, plus any others needed for definitions, etc. All references should come from peer-reviewed journal articles and references should be cited using APA format. You should use Microsoft PowerPoint to create your presentation. Once you have finalized the slides and other visual components of your presentation, you should then record the audio narration component. Audio narration can be accessed within PowerPoint by going to the Slide Show tab and clicking Record Slide Show (detailed directions can be found at). Once you are done recording your narration, listen to the entire presentation to determine if you need to rerecord any sections. Also, please ensure your entire presentation is approximately 15-20 minutes in length. You will then upload your presentation (.pptx) to the PowerPoint Presentation tab on Blackboard. Additional information about the presentation, as well as the grading criteria for this assignment, can be found on Blackboard. If you don’t have access to PowerPoint and a microphone on your personal computer, please use the computers available to you on the UHD campus. All assignments must be completed independently without any aid from others. Any student who fails to cite the work of another author will receive a zero on the presentation for plagiarism. (See the Academic Honesty Policy in this syllabus for a full description of what constitutes plagiarism). The Research Presentation is worth 50 points. You may submit it up to 2 days late, but for each day the assignment is late, 10 points will be deducted from the presentation’s grade. Your grade for the presentation will be posted in the Blackboard grade book within two weeks of the due date. How to Select a Research Topic: For my research Topic I chose Autism.
