The SQ3R reading strategy, which stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review, is a well-structured method designed to enhance comprehension and retention of material. This approach is similar to how I previously read course materials in that it encourages active engagement with the text, requiring me to question and evaluate information rather than passively reading. Previously, my reading was often hurried, which sometimes led to missing key concepts or struggling to recall details later. With SQ3R, I now take the time to survey the material by skimming headings and summaries, creating questions about the content, then reading thoroughly to find answers, reciting key points aloud, and finally reviewing the material to reinforce understanding.
Applying SQ3R has significantly improved my ability to comprehend complex concepts. For example, when studying a chapter on economic theories, surveying the headings helped me identify main topics. Asking questions beforehand, such as “What are the basic principles of Keynesian economics?” focused my reading. As I read, I looked for specific answers and later recited the main ideas aloud, which solidified my understanding. The review stage helped me retain critical details for exams and assignments.
In everyday life, I see value in applying SQ3R to reading newspapers and online articles. By surveying headlines and subheadings, I can determine which articles are most relevant, formulate questions about current events, and read with purpose. Reciting and reviewing key facts can improve my information retention and awareness of current issues. However, in some cases where I feel pressed for time, I find that the detailed SQ3R process can be cumbersome, and a quicker, skimming approach sometimes suffices.
Overall, the SQ3R strategy has made my reading more intentional and effective, especially for academic texts. I believe integrating this method into my daily reading habits can help me become a more critical and engaged consumer of information, both in my studies and in real-world contexts.
