The purpose of this paper is to explore how individual and community needs inform and relate to a specific capstone research inquiry. Understanding these needs is essential for framing research that is relevant, impactful, and tailored to the contexts it aims to serve. This process involves identifying gap areas or pressing issues within a community or among individuals that motivated the research focus. In this discussion, I will articulate the specific needs that prompted my inquiry and explain how my research findings are positioned to address these needs effectively.
The primary community need identified in my research concerns mental health disparities among underserved populations. Literature consistently highlights that marginalized communities experience higher rates of mental health issues coupled with limited access to quality services (Johnson et al., 2020). This disparity underscores the necessity for targeted interventions that are culturally sensitive and accessible. My research seeks to understand the barriers these communities face in accessing mental health support and to propose practical, evidence-based solutions that can bridge these gaps.
On an individual level, the pressing need stems from the personal stories and experiences of those affected. Many individuals within these underserved communities report feelings of stigma, mistrust, and lack of awareness, which hinder seeking help.
