It is well known that a statistics course is one of the requirements of a psychology major. But why is that? Using information provided in this week's reading and knowledge that you have gathered in prior courses (MAT 240 or other stats courses you have taken), indicate why the study of statistics is useful to a person who majors in psychology. In addition, discuss a personal experience in which statistics were used. This experience could be related to education, insurance, developmental milestones for a child, etc., and it could entail your use of statistics or someone else's use of statistics.

Statistics plays a fundamental role in psychology because it provides the tools necessary for understanding, analyzing, and interpreting data related to human behavior and mental processes. As a psychology major, mastering statistical methods allows researchers and practitioners to distinguish between meaningful patterns and random variations, thereby making informed decisions about hypotheses, treatment effectiveness, and behavioral trends. The scientific foundation of psychology relies heavily on empirical data, and without statistical analysis, conclusions would lack credibility and reproducibility (Cohen, 1988). For example, in my own experience, I used statistics during a research project in an undergraduate psychology course. I collected data on students' stress levels before and after a relaxation intervention, then applied paired t-tests to evaluate whether the intervention significantly reduced stress. This experience demonstrated how statistical tests could objectively support or refute hypotheses, ultimately guiding evidence-based practices in psychology (Field, 2013).
