Honesty includes keeping everyone aware of what is going on within the organization — good and bad. “If you never lie, you will not have to remember what you said.” Truth and honesty can be challenging to carry out because we don’t want to be the bearers of bad news. However, in the long run, honesty allows the right solutions to be applied to resolve problems. Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to: develop an understanding of the importance of honesty in a leader.

Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom, as Thomas Jefferson stated. It is more than simply telling the truth; honesty encompasses being trustworthy, loyal, and sincere. It fosters openness and consistency in how we present facts. Demonstrating honest intentions in our speech and actions earns us the respect of others. When considering what honesty entails, being truthful and avoiding lying are fundamental. Leadership that lacks honesty can erode trust, which is critical for effective guidance and influence.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of honesty, reflecting God’s view on the matter. Proverbs 12:17 states, “Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence,” highlighting the value of truthful communication. Conversely, Proverbs 6:16-19 lists behaviors God hates, including a lying tongue and false witness, underscoring the moral weight tied to honesty and deceit.
