Leadership effectiveness hinges significantly on the ability to adapt to evolving organizational demands and team dynamics. Based on my self-assessment using the adaptive leadership toolkit, I identified active listening as a skill requiring development. I often find myself eager to provide solutions prematurely, which can limit team input and hinder collaborative problem-solving. Developing active listening skills will foster better understanding of team members’ perspectives, increase trust, and facilitate more innovative solutions.

Active listening entails fully concentrating on what is being said rather than merely waiting for one's turn to speak. To enhance this skill, I plan to engage in deliberate practice by setting aside time during meetings to summarize and reflect on team members’ comments before responding. This approach aligns with the leadership behaviors necessary for adaptive leadership, such as humility, curiosity, and openness to new ideas. By consciously practicing active listening, I aim to improve my emotional intelligence, which is crucial for effective leadership (Goleman, 1998).

Improving active listening will have a measurable impact on our organization’s employee engagement scores. For instance, it will contribute to a more inclusive environment where employees feel heard and valued, thereby increasing their motivation and commitment. This change should reflect positively in the upcoming engagement survey, particularly in areas related to communication, leadership support, and trust. According to Hargie (2011), effective listening enhances trust and builds stronger workplace relationships, which are critical factors in employee engagement.

In summary, by focusing on active listening, I intend to align my leadership behaviors with the core principles of adaptive leadership. This skill development will not only enable me to lead more effectively but also serve as a model for my team, fostering a culture of openness and continuous improvement that can translate into better organizational outcomes.
