It is essential to distinguish between these, as normal senescence does not significantly impair daily functioning, while abnormal decline can be debilitating.

One characteristic change in cognition with age involves slower information processing and decreased recall ability. This may be evidenced by difficulty remembering names or navigating complex tasks, yet older adults often retain their semantic memory, allowing them to recall facts and general knowledge. Abnormal changes, however, include sudden, progressive declines in memory or cognition that interfere with independence, which could indicate conditions like Alzheimer’s disease or other neurodegenerative disorders (Park, 2020).

Healthy habits play a crucial role in maintaining cognitive health. Regular physical activity has been linked to improvements in neuroplasticity and reductions in cognitive decline. A nutritious diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins supports brain health. Mental stimulation through activities such as reading, puzzles, and social engagement has been associated with slower cognitive decline. Additionally, managing stress, ensuring quality sleep, and avoiding substance misuse contribute to maintaining cognitive function (Gunstad & Cohen, 2021).

From a spiritual perspective, the Bible offers valuable insights into aging, emphasizing reverence and dignity for older adults. Proverbs 16:31 states, "Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life," highlighting the respect and honor due to the aging. Many biblical texts acknowledge aging as a natural part of life that should be embraced with wisdom and grace rather than as a purely negative process (Proverbs 20:29). In this view, aging is seen as a positive phase—an opportunity for reflection, growth, and spiritual maturity—rather than solely a decline or burden.

In summary, while some cognitive changes are inevitable with aging, they are largely manageable through healthy lifestyle choices. Recognizing the distinction between normal and abnormal decline is crucial for early intervention. The biblical perspective encourages viewing aging as a respected stage of life filled with potential for continued growth and service, thus framing it as a positive and meaningful process.
