The objective of this art assignment is to engage students in a creative process that integrates foundational elements of art and principles of design. Students are tasked with creating a personalized and meaningful artwork that demonstrates their understanding of one element of art and one principle of design, fostering both technical skill and conceptual comprehension.

The process begins with a simple, yet insightful task: tracing the outline of their hand on a blank sheet of paper. This initial step not only helps develop hand-eye coordination but also serves as a canvas for further artistic exploration. Once the outline is complete, students are instructed to design a checker pattern within the hand's empty space or within the outline itself. This pattern encourages exploration of repetition and pattern, which are fundamental elements in visual arts.

Following this, students are to incorporate the first letter of their name into the artwork. This personalized element allows students to infuse their work with identity, creativity, and self-expression. Placement of the letter should complement the checker pattern, creating a cohesive visual composition. The choice of element of art—such as line, shape, texture, color, form, space, or value—and the principle of design—such as balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, proportion, scale, unity, or variety—needs to be carefully considered and intentionally integrated into the work.

After completing the visual components, students must then articulate their understanding by naming the element of art and the principle of design represented in their artwork. This reflective component enhances critical thinking and artistic awareness, fostering a deeper understanding of how visual elements and principles work together to communicate meaning.

Finally, students are required to document their work by capturing two photographs: one of the finished piece and another of an intermediate stage or a different viewing angle. These images will enable students to share their creative process and finished product with their teacher, fostering communication and evaluation skills.

This assignment emphasizes both technical skills—such as drawing, pattern creation, and composition—and cognitive skills, including analysis, reflection, and articulation of artistic choices. It encourages students to explore personal identity through art while reinforcing essential concepts of visual literacy.
