Academic integrity is built on a foundation of honest, responsible, fair, and trustworthy scholarly activity. Without it, the degrees conferred, research conducted, and the institution’s reputation diminish in value. The UC San Diego Policy on Integrity of Scholarship sets the standards for student conduct related to honesty and responsible academic behavior.

The policy applies to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at UC San Diego, including students in medical, pharmacy, and extension programs, with special policies for research integrity. Students are responsible for submitting original work, knowing class and institutional standards, and avoiding misconduct such as plagiarism, cheating, or submitting work completed by others. Instructors are responsible for clearly communicating grading criteria and integrity expectations; instructional assistants must uphold ethical standards and report violations. When violations occur, faculty report suspected cases to the Academic Integrity Office (AIO), which oversees investigations and sanctions. Administrative authorities, including deans and directors, impose sanctions such as grade penalties, suspension, or dismissal, based on the severity of violations. Students can appeal decisions regarding responsibility and sanctions, with final authority resting with the Educational Policy Committee. I firmly agree with the policy’s emphasis on honesty, fairness, and responsibility in academic endeavors. Upholding integrity is essential not only for individual credibility but also for maintaining the value of academic qualifications and research outputs (Leavy, 2018). Knowing that truthful work underpins the academic process inspires confidence in scholarly achievements and helps prevent misconduct that can tarnish reputations and distort knowledge. However, while I support the policy’s strictness, I am mindful of the importance of fairness and due process to ensure that students are not unjustly penalized. Working with integrity aligns with my personal values, and I believe fostering an environment where honesty is prioritized is crucial for a trustworthy academic community (McCabe & Pavol, 2020). Nevertheless, continuous education on ethical standards and clear communication are necessary so students understand expectations and how to avoid inadvertent violations, ultimately promoting a culture of integrity rather than solely punitive measures.
