English 321: History Response as mentioned in the course policy sheet, for each unit you will have the opportunity to write a 2-3 page response to a prompt(s) that is given at the end of each unit. Throughout the semester you must turn in 4 such responses. Each response is worth 25 points. What do I mean by a response? A response is your view and analysis of a prompt that I give to you.
In other words, I want to know what you like or didn’t like about the issue being addressed and why you feel the way that you do. You must be able to explain in detail your belief by incorporating examples from the various readings, songs, films, presentations, etc. Only giving your view but not explaining your perspective will not give you a good grade. History Prompts (Select one of the two to write about) Prompt #1 So far this semester we have talked about the beginnings of metal, with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple along with a few others. We’ve touched on various time periods during metal’s formative years through the late 90’s and early 2000’s. We’ve talked about some of the genres of metal, including Glam, Death, Black, Proto-metal, and Thrash metal—as well as watching Anvil: The Story of Anvil. Each of these texts was meant to give you some background on metal history and culture—though clearly we have a lot more to discuss about this subject. As you consider this response, decide which of the texts (readings, songs, or film) specifically do you think gave you the best insight into the History and Culture of metal. For instance, if you believe Anvil: The Story of Anvil was most insightful then you need to discuss in detail the reasons why by giving specific examples and explaining how those examples support your view. These prompts are always going to ask you to make an argument and support it—assuming you select the more formal approach.
Prompt #2 This prompt is more creative in nature. Select one of the songs we have listened to this semester and I would like you to write a creative piece that more clearly explains it. For instance, if you select “Smoke on the Water,’ then you could retell the story by having two band members recount the events many years later as they sit in a bar remembering their early days in the band. You may write a short story, a play, or even a long poem that retells the events in a song or the meaning behind the song in a creative way. If you wish, you may go over the 2-3 page limit Response Due Date: Thursday, September 29 at the beginning of class. responses to this two discussion need to be thoughtful, thorough, and comprehensive. include a properly formatted in-text citation and reference to support your position.
