There are many environmental issues facing our planet today. Unfortunately, many of the environmental issues we face are occurring right where we live. The purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with an environmental issue affecting your local community. After viewing the introductory video for the assignment, you should use the Southern Environmental Law Center (link/website provided below) to explore current environmental issues in the Southeast United States.
You will be able to choose an issue to research from the site and report on the issue of interest based on the resources provided. Please review the Southern Environmental Law Center web page and view issues related to the environment in the Southeastern United States. You'll notice you can view by the issues (in the blocks on the main page) or you can click on the "Our States" link on that main homepage and find issues related to a specific state, including Georgia.
Using this website, investigate current environmental issues affecting the Southeastern United States. After previewing the website, choose one environmental issue affecting the Southeastern United States as the focus of your Environmental Issues Activity. Use the questions below to organize your written response.
The written response should be crafted with the following specifications: a narrative format; use at least three reliable sources to assist in crafting the narratives; one of the three required sources may be the Southern Environmental Law Center, the other two must be different. Cite your research/information gained (APA format) from your outside resources and include references at the end of the assignment.
In your narrative, please use the questions below to guide your research, create your narratives and complete your Environmental Activities Issues. You should address all of the following questions:
- Please describe the topic that you chose for your assignment and explain why you chose that particular topic.
- Why is this an important environmental topic? Who/what/where is affected by this issue?
- What can be done to lessen the impact or begin to remediate your environmental issue?
Criteria: Please review the Environmental Issues Rubric for how you'll be assessed on this assignment. Please remember you should submit documents as JPG, PDF, RTF, PNG, DOC and DOCX only. Other formats will not be accepted. Incorrect submission formats could impact your grade.

The chosen environmental issue for this assignment is water pollution in the Chesapeake Bay region. I selected this topic because the Chesapeake Bay is a crucial ecosystem in the United States, affecting millions of residents, wildlife, and local economies. The health of the bay directly impacts water quality, marine life, and recreational activities, making it a significant issue worth exploring.
Water pollution in the Chesapeake Bay is caused primarily by agricultural runoff, urban development, and wastewater discharge. Excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, enter the bay through these sources, leading to eutrophication—a process that results in excessive algae growth. This algae depletes oxygen levels in the water, causing dead zones where aquatic life cannot survive. The issue is critical because it threatens biodiversity, fisheries, and the livelihoods of communities dependent on the bay. Additionally, polluted waters pose health risks to humans, especially those engaged in fishing or water recreational activities.
This topic affects a broad range of stakeholders: local residents, fishermen, wildlife, and industries such as tourism and agriculture. The degradation of water quality impacts the economic well-being of communities and the ecological balance of the region. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have recognized the importance of addressing this issue to restore the bay's health. Remediation efforts include implementing agricultural best practices, upgrading wastewater treatment plants, and enforcing pollution controls. For example, reducing fertilizer use, creating riparian buffers, and restoring wetlands can help filter pollutants before they reach the bay, thereby lessening the impact of runoff.
In addition, public awareness campaigns and policy enforcement are vital for long-term remediation. Community involvement in conservation practices and support for policies that reduce pollutant discharge are essential. The implementation of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement exemplifies collaborative efforts to improve water quality. Overall, prioritizing sustainable agricultural practices, strengthening regulatory measures, and fostering community stewardship are necessary steps to combat water pollution and restore the ecological health of the Chesapeake Bay.
