In its most simplified form, an analysis may be a review. Instead of analyzing a written text, you will “read” and analyze a restaurant and a movie (or another activity) that can be done in or near Cookeville. Description or a summary of your chosen “text” alone is NOT enough; it will result in a failing grade. This process aims to teach you how to position yourself as a reader/viewer/writer and how to communicate that position through your writing. Consideration of your audience and voice is essential.
You may NOT choose a franchise or chain restaurant, such as Taco Bell or Red Lobster. Your options include local restaurants like Gyro Dude, India Palace, Mamma Rosa’s, The Cooke House, or Crawdaddys; activities such as hiking and photography at a local park, disc golf, roller derby or skating, laser tag, exercise classes, or local races; or entertainment events such as a roller derby bout, art exhibit, or movie.
Your essay must be formatted according to MLA guidelines, including double-spacing. It should be between 900 and 1200 words. Your writing should demonstrate critical thinking.
The essay must include the following elements, although not necessarily in this order: a brief description/summary (not exceeding 200 words), your position and criteria for evaluation, identification of the audience for the restaurant or activity, price considerations, atmosphere description, whether you would recommend it or try it again, and for movies, include actors and the director (without revealing the ending).
