One significant societal challenge that warrants attention is the rising prevalence of depression among college students, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. This mental health issue has seen a marked increase, impacting not only students but also their families, academic institutions, and the broader community. The pandemic has exacerbated mental health issues, leading to heightened feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression among students (Li & Menzel, 2022). Several studies have indicated a surge in depression rates, with the American College Health Association reporting that over 40% of college students experienced moderate to severe depressive symptoms during the pandemic period (ACHA, 2021). Recognizing this, my research question aims to explore what researchers have learned about the impact of COVID-19 on depression among college students, and how these effects can be mitigated. Specifically, I am interested in understanding effective interventions, support systems, and policy measures that have been identified to reduce the incidence or severity of depression in this population. Addressing this problem is crucial because depression can significantly impair students' academic performance, social relationships, and overall well-being, which can have long-term consequences for their personal and professional lives (Huang et al., 2021). By synthesizing existing research findings, my goal is to identify actionable strategies to support college students' mental health, foster resilience, and improve their academic and life outcomes.
