Ep 4814: Exercise Science Internship Final Report: Summer 2020 Guidelines: Each intern is required to submit a Final Report describing and evaluating his/her total internship experience. This report is to be typed, double spaced in typical paragraph format, and submitted to the Department of Kinesiology Internship Coordinator at the completion of the internship before/on the due date given in the syllabus. Remember, when writing, you should always have an introduction and conclusion and there should be a logical flow throughout your paper. There is no set length to the paper, but approximately 3-4 pages of text would probably be appropriate for most. The following are the areas which the report should address.
A. Title Page: should include Date, Name of student, Name of site and site supervisor, Course code and section, and Name of course instructor. B. Description of the site at which you completed the internship. This should include not only the main purpose and objectives of the site, but also a description of the clientele and personnel (number, age, sex, social/ethnic background, special characteristics, etc.), as pertinent.
C. Description of significant experiences A thorough description of your significant learning experiences of the internship. Include details about any special projects worked on or any other special learning experiences. If there is a finished product or pictures that can be included from a special project or other special experiences, please submit with your report. Please share the defining moments of the internship, both good and bad, and how they influenced/impacted you.
This should be the largest portion of your paper. D. Student Self-Evaluation Goals and objectives, accomplishments, strengths, shortcomings, future career interests, and other pertinent information should be addressed. Did your goals and objectives change over the course of the internship? Did you meet or exceed your stated goals and objectives?
How could you have improved your performance during the internship? What did you learn about yourself through this internship? In what areas did you experience the most professional growth? In hindsight, is there anything you would have done differently during the internship? What did you learn about your competency in this area?
Please also include what your future plans are after graduation and how this internship may have influenced those goals. E. Site Evaluation: Evaluate your internship site. Is this a good site at which to do an internship? Were you able to gain valuable experience or make valuable contacts at this site?
Would you recommend that future interns utilize this site? Are there any changes that the site could feasibly make that would make the experience more valuable to the intern? What are the strengths/weaknesses of this site? Or, how could the site better utilize the interns? F.

This report summarizes my experiences, evaluations, and reflections throughout this internship period, offering insights into the facility, significant learning moments, personal growth, and program recommendations.
Description of the Site
FitWell Sports Center is a community-focused fitness and rehabilitation facility dedicated to promoting physical health among diverse populations. The primary objectives include providing quality fitness programs, rehabilitation services, and educational workshops. The clientele varies widely, including young athletes, seniors, individuals recovering from injury, and fitness enthusiasts. The staff comprises personal trainers, physical therapists, and administrative personnel. The age range of clientele spans from teenagers to elderly adults, with a balanced representation of males and females from various social and ethnic backgrounds. The personnel team, numbering approximately 25 professionals, collaborates closely to deliver personalized services tailored to individual needs.
Significant Experiences
One of the most impactful experiences was participating in the development and implementation of a new post-rehabilitation exercise program for injured athletes. I contributed to designing exercises, monitoring client progress, and providing feedback under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. This hands-on participation deepened my understanding of injury management and rehabilitation strategies.
Additionally, I took part in organizing community health workshops, which enhanced my communication and educational skills. Self-Evaluation and Personal Growth
My initial goal was to observe and assist in athletic rehabilitation; however, I quickly expanded my objectives to include developing organizational and interpersonal skills. Throughout the internship, I achieved most of my goals, notably gaining practical experience in client assessment, exercise program design, and teamwork.
My strengths include enthusiasm, strong communication skills, and a solid theoretical foundation in exercise science. Shortcomings involved occasional uncertainty in clinical decision-making, highlighting areas for further study. I realized that I perform best when collaborating and applying evidence-based techniques.
My professional growth was most evident in my ability to independently develop exercise plans and interact confidently with clients. I learned the importance of patience, active listening, and adaptability. Reflecting on the experience, I would have spent more time shadowing senior therapists to refine my clinical judgment.
Post-graduation, I intend to pursue certification as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and continue working in sports rehabilitation. This internship confirmed my passion for integrating exercise science with injury recovery, shaping my future career goals.
Site Evaluation
FitWell Sports Center proved to be an excellent site for an internship, offering diverse experiences across rehabilitation, fitness training, and client education. The staff were welcoming and willing to mentor, providing valuable contacts and insights into the industry. I would recommend this site to future interns seeking comprehensive exposure to exercise rehabilitation and sports performance.
To improve the experience, suggestions include formalizing internship roles to ensure consistent assignments and providing interns with access to more advanced equipment. The site’s strengths include a supportive environment, multidisciplinary approach, and community engagement, while weaknesses involve limited exposure to administrative functions.
Enhancing intern involvement in administrative tasks could enrich future experiences and better prepare students for diverse roles in the field.
Program Evaluation and Suggestions
The internship program under Mrs. Joe is well-organized, responsive, and dedicated to student development. However, incorporating structured feedback sessions midway through the internship could help address issues promptly. Offering preparatory workshops on clinical decision-making could further improve intern readiness.
Most valuable courses for preparation included KIN 350 (Exercise Physiology) and KIN 410 (Rehabilitation Techniques), which provided the foundational knowledge necessary for clinical work. To enhance the program, introducing mentorship pairings and expanding internship diversity could increase value for future students.
Conclusion
This internship has been instrumental in affirming my career direction, enhancing my practical skills, and expanding my professional network. The hands-on experiences, combined with reflective practice, have prepared me to pursue a future in exercise rehabilitation and sports medicine with confidence.
